Ronald D Moore's Deep Space Nine influence is a lot stronger is this second part of the mini series. He took several of his ideas for DS9 and dialed them up to 11 for BSG. There's the strong presence of religion as you've already mentioned (in DS9 it's the Bajoran faith that is prevalent throughout the show). The 'evil' aliens/empire/faction determined to wipe out humanity (in DS9 it's a faction that works like an anti-Federation and brings them to their knees essentially). There's the human looking Cylons and you only know some of them (in DS9 there's 'doppelganger' infiltrators meant to sabotage and destabilize). In BSG those parts have been distilled into a purer form. And it works really well.

Fully agree that the losses are terrible on Galactica and immediate (though still a relatively small number of the crew) but they pale to insignificance to the losses in the Colonies. I don't think the miniseries (to avoid any possible spoilers) gives any population numbers but even if we assume the colonies are of a similar population to Earth (and it seems there would be more people in total from what they've shown us of Caprica alone) a full nuclear attack on 12 colonies would be billions or tens of billions dead. It is honestly beyond comprehension, more than have died in every war man has ever fought in all of history put together. It... just goes beyond any imagining of loss and they do try to grab the crew's initial reactions to the news pretty well.
