Well, I have to confess I'm not giving you views on YouTube any more, but that's just because I'm giving you views here on Patreon instead. My guess (and it's only that) is that we're meant to infer the old man was already on the edge of death just from old age and the vine just pushed him too far. But the Gals are right: it was really just the plot that killed him. Overall, this story is pretty cheesy and melodramatic. It's one of the lesser outings of early Who. Susan's excessive screaming is a big part of why Carole Anne Ford left the series after the first season. She would later say she expected Susan to remain more like she was in "An Unearthly Child"— strange and mysterious and more like the Doctor himself. She was disappointed that as soon as the pilot episode was done, Susan became just a frightened child.

I thought Day of the Triffids

The UK switched to degrees C in 1961, which was indeed three years before this episode so... I dunno.

Martyn Hill

20 degrees F (-8 C) would be regarded as very cold for us Brits as it very rarely gets down to that temperature in Southern England where Barbara and Ian lived. Loving the reactions by the way, even though this is not a particularly good episode

Algorithms mystify and frustrate, I agree. I had to step away from Instagram in order to stop comparing my posts to others. As for this episode, so much cheesy fun!. DE3O2 = Destruction Dioxide?

As far as I remember, the BBC and ITV weather kept with a dual temperature report of Fahrenheit and Celsius whilst I was growing up. In my childhood back in the sixties the emphasis was always on the former, otherwise I wouldn't have got so used to it and felt that Celsius was not my system. All the temperature gauges we have had, or bought, have had both and we didn't particularly look for one or the other. The same with rulers we used at school had inches and later had dual measurement in the seventies. Thing is with Carole Ann Ford, she was actually around 23 or 24 at the time of Doctor Who, playing a lot younger than herself. It must have been tedious to see in the script something like Susan: - dissolves into hysterics - again! Barbara/Ian/Grandfather consoles her and thinking "Not again? Well, this is doing nothing for my career!" and "If I see another Dalek again, I'll scream! . . . . Oh! . . . . Wait! . . . That's what I always do anyway!" At least one thing. She predicted the changeover to the decimal system seven years early. She has that in her resumé!

I got to say I did not particularly enjoy your YouTube edits. unlike other reactors I follow, your clips always felt too short somehow, Like I was missing all the good parts. it is actually the main reason I joined your patreon, your full reactions are great.

Time Lord

Unfortunately we do get hit on YT a lot for copy right strikes that others don't necessarily seem to get hit with as much. I've had to learn how to edit around it to the best of my ability for the YT blocking bots 😭

tal goren

well, it got you at least one extra patreon, so maybe it is actually good for your marketing :)

To join in Bill's comment, the BBC changed from Fahrenheit to Celsius in Oct. 1962, Barbara would have grown up thinking in Fahrenheit.
