That has to be the densest episode of star trek, I mean I can count how many different things where happening and just thrown in there.

This episode is why Spock is one of my favorite characters because of how relatable I found him to be. Dealing with a dysfunctional family and feelings of not quite fitting in. 🖖

Since you're not watching all of TOS, I don't think it's a spoiler to say Sarek and Amanda don't appear in this series any more, but they do show up in some of the movies. And it was a sure sign Paula has made a Katrina a fan when they both yelled, "Warp 10?!?"

This is why the hard scene cuts were filmed this way, there was no time to set up the fight scene but it wasn't needed, it definitely not only catches the viewer off guard as Kirk and the fake Andorian were fighting, but they also had the perfect music to jump in with it. The only musical piece that doesn't work for me is after the Tellarite Gav was murdered and Spock states that Vulcans are the only ones capable of doing it the music was again to shock the audience but it just feels weird and cheesy to have two seconds of a note play.

This episide was definitely an eye opener for some of the more famous alien races being introduced into Trek culture as well as members and non-members of the Federation. Having seen what an Andorian and Tellerites as well as unnamed but onscreen various other alien races have long been used in novels, comics and the Star Trek Compendium cataloging the various races and planets the different series have dealt with. We also see that Sarek who was 102 years old here and 202 in TNG episode Sarek that he had been a Federation Ambassador for well over 100 years since Bones hinted at Sarek's potential retirement yet was still active up until Picard melded with him to complete his final mission as an Ambassador.

I don't know if the piggy guys show up in live action again (actually, there MIGHT be one in Enterprise), but I think one shows up in Prodigy and another in Lower Decks, they look far better in animated form. I think one has solid black eyes, which I think is what was giving that "detached mask" feel in this episode, but another has them with regular eyes.

Nolan

Tellerite's canonically have hooded eyes, but when they do reappear in a later series they did have a minor redesign to clean it up a bit while retaining similar elements. In fact they got a minor redesign when they appear in later episodes of this series. We've seen an Andorian in TNG as one of the options Data's offspring was considering for their species/gender. They have a larger role in a later series also. Orions are usually green. They've shown up a few times in this series and a few others as well. Actually, they do show up in a later series, and they get name-dropped a few times in others. Sarek says he is 102 here and Spock is probably in his 40s? 60s? Either way, I think the small age gap between the actors of father and son is more forgivable in this instance. And, yes, Sarek gets married to another Human. Considering 75 years elapsed between TOS and TNG and Spock's age, it's not surprising that Amanda passed between the series. This episode pretty much lays the foundation for Star Trek moving forward as much as TOS as a whole laid that foundation.

Tellarites show up in Enterprise and have small appearances in Discovery, Strange New Worlds and at least one of the movies. However, they do have more screen time in Prodigy than the rest combined. For a founding member of the Federation, they don't get much love.

Oh I forgot, we do see Spock’s parents again in an episode of the animated series. That one is definitely kind of a strange series in some ways, but you may consider watching that one episode. Gives us more of a look into Spock’s history, and calls back to other TOS episodes. It’s one of the main reasons some fans have always seen the cartoon series as canon.

As far as potential future TOS episodes (after TNG at this stage I guess) I think "The Enterprise Incident" is one you guys might like.

You will also see Sarek and Amanda in the movie, ST:IV The Voyage Home. After TNG, I'd say either ... The Enterprise Incident, The Devil in the Dark, or An Errand of Mercy. But Holy Cow, I am really excited for Any upcoming TNG movies, you girls Rock!!!

Robert C

Are they planning to watch The Voyage Home? It's a fun one.

Great episode! As beautiful as Jane Wyatt (Amanda) was in this episode, she was just as beautiful MANY MANY years later in "Star Trek: The Voyage Home". She passed away after that. Amanda is mentioned one last time when Sarek mind melds with Picard. When Picard is having that breakdown he recalls Amanda and Spock in the memories hes having.

DC

Whenever you two react to TOS, I love the utter joy that you get from the theme song!! Savage Curtain is wild. I can't wait to see your reactions to it.

A Tellarite (piggy guy) shows up in the third season episode "Whom Gods Destroy," but his makeup seems more subtle, mainly a prosthetic nose and facial hair.

Mark Chrisco

Back, in the day Jane Wyatt, Mark Lenard and Leonard Nimoy appeared individually and together at a NYC convention All were delightful but Miss Wyatt brought the house down by revealing Spock's human name was Harold

I'm a bit apprehensive, honestly. There's an exchange between characters in a bridge scene which was questionable in 1960s, that the gals would find very offensive by today's standards.
