The Adopted Whovian

For Paula, when Ashad said he was denied his ascension, he was basically saying that his Cyber-Conversion failed. Some people's bodies reject the conversion process, which is why he was incomplete. I think he also made a lot of self repairs and upgrades which is why he had a Classic style Cyberman arm with a human hand, as his left arm hadn't been surgically replaced with a robotic arm.

The Adopted Whovian

You may have not noticed but in The Haunting of Villa Diodati, the Lone Cyberman had leg braces (probably his own self upgrade) then in this episode had normal leg armour. Ray Holman the costume designer said that was because he wanted to show that some time had passed between The Haunting of Villa Diodati and Ascension of the Cybermen. The one piece baggy suit he was wearing under the armour was a nod to Classic Cybermen, it resembled the Tomb of the Cybermen, Cybermen the most. Ray Holman said that the baggy suit is a lining between armour and flesh, to cover all of the icky stuff.

This episode annoys me so much. It starts with the doctor in a rare situation. She knows what she will be dealing with and had plenty of time to prepare, so there is no need for the usual guess work and improvised solutions. The last time we saw the doctor take things this seriously was in "a good man goes to war" and then he brought an army with him.  Here on the other hand the doctor come alone, with just her companions and set up equipment that doesn't even work, because the cybermen used the 'so unpredictable' tactic of aerial bombardment. The doctor shouldn't have lost here, not against just 3 cybermen. The only reason she did was because Chibnall wanted her to be on the run and couldn't be bothered to write a believable scenario for this to happen. This is lazy writing. The only other episode I can think of that had writing this lazy was "the angels take Manhattan" and at least there the laziness was only in the end.

The irish part of the story was an utter disappointment. The next episode it's telling the story how it really happened, which makes this whole irish bit totally unnecessary and distracting. I've praised the writing a lot in this season. This was not good writing, though. It felt like they needed time to fill and put it in there. On it's own the irish bit is an interesting mystery and a nice story. Within the story of the season, it felt like a waste of time for me. I gained nothing from this irish story bit. Otherwise this is a good two/three part Finale.

This season wasn't filmed during 2020, but it came out during 2020, at the very early weeks of the pandemic

You're not far off thinking "Borg cube" on the cybership, the Star Trek: TNG writers have been up front in saying the Borg were inspired by the Cybermen. There were articles in Starlog magazine at the time where they talked about it. So it's fair play for Dr Who to then borrow back in its turn. (There's an entertaining crossover graphic novel where the TNG cast meet the Eleventh Doctor, that makes the parallel explicit.) This season was shown in 2020 but filmed before COVID happened; it was only the next season that was shortened, and had its filming procedures altered, by the pandemic. On the quality of this episode in particular: it has all the problems of poor story structure that bothered me from the beginning of Chibnall's work as showrunner. My reaction throughout the first two seasons of his run was that each episode was filled with beautiful pieces that never seemed to come together into well-designed wholes. Next episode, though... well, comment will have to wait until you see it.

This was the start of the end (for me). No spoilers, but... Nah. No spoilers.

Honestly don't have much to say about this. Really excited for next episode! Love it and I'll get into why, then! I have a lot to say.
