On ratings - there's just a noticeable drop during Jodie's era that IMO isn't reflective of the quality as a whole. I mentally add a couple of points to any rating in this era and that seems to work out about right.

For me, this Orphan 55 wasn't as bad as Fear Me, but it's one my least-favorite episodes in a while. The first section was good, lots of (literally and metaphorically) colorful characters just weird enough for Doctor Who. Hopper virus, cat-people; weird but in a goofy, Dr Who kind of way that I liked. Strange creatures attacking a vacation resort, pretty much standard for Doctor Who, no problems with that. When they decide to go on the recue mission outside the dome is when things start going downhill for me. So many characters and relationships are introduced, and we get only cursory examinations of each of them. Kane and Bella went from trying to destroy each other, to dying for each other in the space of 5 minutes. Same with the mechanics, their relationship problems were resolved with not much work. I'm sorry to say that I found Velma and Benni's relationship unintentionally comedic, and others spawned the "B-B-B-Benni and the Dregs" meme I see so much. I didn't get much out of their relationship, but I'm SUPER glad Paula connected with them a lot. Then there's the ending, which pretty much everyone says was too much. It's a shame because Jodie's performance is so good in that speech. Maybe if it had been placed elsewhere in the episode, and it didn't have the corny RAWWWRRRR.... not sure how that could have been done though. I liked Ed Hime's previous episode "It Takes You Away" and was really looking forward to this one when I saw he'd written it. But this one didn't work for me at all.

It's a lot better than I remember it being. The ending is a bit heavy handed, but, let's face it. Humans are stupid. They (in general) need to be hit over the head with a message before it will even begin to sink in.

Scribbles

I'm happy with most of Chibnall's stuff...except for ANYTHING connected to the "everything you thought you knew was a lie" part and everything that comes from it. I don't mind lore altering things, but not when they're made with the intention of changing what came before. Like the Time War. I mean, yes, RTD blew up Gallifrey, but he set that in a time period AFTER Classic Who was over. It didn't alter anything that came before. Touching the show's lore all the way back to it's very beginnings bothers me a LOT. I'm sorry, but no...Time Lords cannot be made by two humans banging in a TARDIS. No. And that's just a small example.

Funny That

For me, with this episode, there just wasn't the space for a fully engaging story. Why does everyone still alive recklessly go on the search unless there wasn't time for a subplot back at the resort? Someone or a team had to go, to find out about the Dregs, to discover what planet they were on, but everyone? Could have been a chance for Yaz to go solo and shine, helping make amends for spoiling the proposal (not that Yaz really had time to spoil anything)... the kindly couple might even have then survived. Character-wise, the doomed couple works, but I think that is due to the actors knowing what story they were in (i.e., The Poseidon Adventure) and successfully making the most of what little they got. The green haired father/son thing was just weird: their relationship better belongs in a 30 advert where pathologically oblivious/dumb dads abound. And though there is thankfully just about enough time for the Tardis Fam to react to a destroyed Earth, there isn't time to show how the humans(?) we meet feel about Earth being wasted/ruined other than it being an opportunity for Kane. (And there was a missed opportunity for the Tardis crew to give off at the Doctor about keeping things to herself despite agreeing to be more open last episode). There was never likely any version of 'Fear Her' that could have ever worked, but make a meaningful two-parter of this episode and it could have been great.

I found this episode interesting and gripping to begin with - but in the final fifteen minutes it fell apart piece by piece; culminating in the Doctors "now listen, kids" speech. Imo,it sort of summarizes this era of Who: some genuinely interesting ideas; spoiled by a kind of proselytizing, which ends up feeling infuriatingly inevitable. It's as though Chibnall is saying "through these Dr Who episodes,I intend to make you change your opinion of things; until you all look at life the way I do - which happens to be the correct way"; rather than "through these Dr Who episodes,I intend for you to have fun, be entertained; and, occasionally, lightly informed".

Still deciding if I should watch a reaction of this episode or not 🤷🤷🤷😜

Funny That

Give it a go dude ==b Appreciate the episode and enjoy the reaction.

I don't have a problem with trying to change people's minds, goodness knows at least 80% of all Dr. Who episodes have some message or another. The way he went about it this time was a bit ham-fisted though.

I like how this episode encapsulates what the daleks were from the beginning. it's a good modern take on the idea.

Scribbles

God, I can't imagine the tantrums fans would throw over stories like The Green Death.

Bill

Very heavy handed. Agreed. Until then, pretty good episode. No attachment to the randoms that were obviously only there to die. The daughter whose "plan" was just to blow up her moms workplace because she felt neglected? Oh boo-hoo. I can understand the ratings. Just kind of limp noodle on multiple levels. Too many mini-stories going on in too short of a period. Even Tom Baker being possessed by a sentient cactus was better in some ways.

Mark Ten

Not sure how the ratings are determined. Why would they drop for first broadcast if the public hasnt seen this episode yet? If ratings also include rebroadcast, streaming, etc. then word of mouth & reviews would have an effect.

Ian Smith

The Green Death told it's story over six episodes, though; and wove it's message around a fun, scary and imaginative storyline (including a developing romance); which built to a satisfying conclusion. This one.... didn't. :)

Paul Mason

I meant ratings as in the scores people give on imdb (which are the ones I look at) not ratings as in audience numbers.

Nicole Mazza

Plus, the Green Death has the great bittersweet ending with Jo's wedding and the Doctor just driving off into the night alone in Bessie. It always makes me cry. 😭

Brendan Falvy

It's a good episode. The Twin Dilemma is objectively worse... even worse than Fear Her or Love and Monsters.

Peter Nolan

I do think it's that factor that the ending is so heavy handed and then that's the moment people remember. I think about 90% of the negative comments at the time were about the last two and a half minutes. And even at that I think a more organic segue from that scene would have softened it, and the reaction to it a lot. I get why "crash cut into the face of a dreg" felt like a big lightbulb when scripting it, but it's the sort of thing I'd have expected to be pulled back in later drafts as too much.

Peter Nolan

One BTS thing about this episode that I think really changes how I think about it is that the decision to make Orphan 55 Earth was made late in the day. Which is why the Kane thing feels a bit off, to me at least. If she was just colonising and pushing an indigenous people off the land for profit, that's pretty straightforward villainy. But the story still sort of treats her as a villain even though she's, in this filmed version, a human being trying to undo the damage humanity did to the Earth so they can come home. So it's a very mixed message.
