As far as Scanlan goes, he gets a lot of his development AFTER this arc in the campaign. This is pretty much how he was played back during this time.

I don't think the book subplot is a direct lift from the Campaign and as far as I know they're not 'canon' D&D beasties. As CR has rolled along Matt Mercer uses more and more home-brew to avoid "oh, it must be a dire wolf/displacer beast" and, clearly, to mess with his players (and viewers) a little and keep them on their toes. They did have some wilderness encounters on the way to Whitestone, I think a big encounter with a behir. Am I the only one that thinks the big gaping maw was a direct visual nod to Stranger Things? Like a friendly wave to the other franchise that made D&D popular about the same time as them. Once again, my favourite things are watching Paula realise she knows what's going on but still isn't prepared for it and Kat seeing it with such fresh eyes.

Paula's gasp when she heard "More Formal Attire" about the dinner guests says it all. And thus proof that the Briarwoods are truly one of the most evil villains to ever grace a D&D game. Scanlan gets better, they did play up the sexuality aspect of his character a bit more. Also weirdly I don't remember Vex Disliking Keyleth in the live game. Some small tidbits. -In the campaign Trinket did go with them to Whitestone but even Laura Bailey (Vex) kept forgetting about him at times so the show saw it easier to write him out of the arc. _The creatures in the Live Stream where supposed to be Hellhounds but since Wizards of the Coast actually had the rights to that they had to change them around for the show. -It is nice that we still get to check in with Pike, seeing stuff that happened out of game and padding out her story is a nice way to make her still feel included even when Ashley had to leave for filming on Blindspot. -The Scene around the fire (Minus Scanlan) are all beasts Vox Machina fought during campaign one up to that point but the show understandable didn't have time to show. All those events would have canonically taken place between episode 2 and 3 of this show timeline wise. Not much I can really think of that the episode didn't cover (Or it goes to deep into spoiler territory) but as always loved the reaction. Can't wait till next week!

Paula's reaction to seeing the dinner guests was priceless!

Man I love this show, an seeing your reactions to grog and pike, the family, percy's shadow, etc etc, is phenomenal.

Yeah, it was his moment in the upcoming episode in particular where he really got serious.

I don't remember the behir, but I do remember harpys on the way to Whitestone. Particularly on the cliffs surrounding it. So these beasts were probably stand-ins for those encounters.
