Been waiting for this season! This season has one of my favorite episodes in it, written by one of my favorite fantasy authors!

Scribbles

Here we go... *braces and waits for Series 7b*

John

I've been as excited for this series as I am Season 3 of TNG!

Firefly24601

Glad you two are advocating for your work/life balance, and sticking to your guns!

Bruce Bromley

I remember Matt Smith taking about filming this episode in Utah when he was on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. The only late night guy with a TARDIS on his desk. :-) Also, is this the first time we've had actor crossover between TNG and DW? The man who played the older Delaware also was in TNG's The Schizoid Man as Ira Graves, William Morgan Sheppard. One last FYI, William and Mark Sheppard are father and son.

Doug C

Mad I have to wait to get home to watch this, but as to the question of guessing all the twists and turns, I want to get on the record early with a definite “no”. 😁

Anonymous

Mark Sheppard ! Love him ! I'm just actually binge watching Supernatural (Season 6 at the moment). Nice to see you two and the doctor again !!

Anonymous

Bruce, you forgot to mention that William Morgan Sheppard is Mark Sheppard’s father!

Pam Nail

Probably my favorite season opener. It's like a crossover with The West Wing, and I am HERE FOR IT. I had thought for ages that the Oval Office set they used was the same as the one used on The West Wing (originally built for the movie The American President), but NO. They built it in Wales and it was just incredibly accurate (luckily there are a bajillion photographs of the real one to work from). These are also probably my favorite Who monsters. I know everyone loves the Angels, but these guys feel like they could actually exist in some form and we just don't remember.

Jeff Seely

You planned this out really well. Right after getting to the end of TNG season 2, here you come swooping in with Doctor Who season 6. And I agree that you have to take breaks from time to time -- not just because you have other things going on in your lives, but because if you try to force yourselves to just keep going constantly with one show or another, you risk becoming burnt out on it. And that wouldn't be good for you or us. There's so much going on in Doctor Who season 6 and I can't talk about any of it. I'm just excited to see your journey through one of my favorite Doctor Who seasons.

My GF and I miss Craig. Been watching old clips on Youtube. Loved his sitdowns with Stephen Fry.

Anonymous

99% sure that little extra intro bit wasn't there when I watched it when it aired... But I could be wrong

Bruce Bromley

I have a couple of hundred of the shows on my HD. Enjoyed the hell out of him and JRT. He rekindled my interest of DW with all the people from it he had on the show. Especially enjoyed his theme show and his song he did for the opening. Doctor Who is the triumph of intellect and romance over brute force and cynicism. youtube.com/watch?=0sK5d3oshp8

Firefly24601

I have heard that Dr Who started a push in Series 6 of trying to get Americans into the show. So when it aired on BBC America, they put in this pre-intro to explain what was going on. From Amy's viewpoint, anyway.

Anonymous

I have so much to say about Paula's take after the episode but I hesitate to say anything that could be construed as spoilerish. I'll summarize by saying I agree with her take completely about Moffat.

BrightHeart

Silence has begun to fall.

Anonymous

This is my favorite season of Who, so I am really excited to watch the reaction from two of my favorite ladies.

Jay Willis

Last season I was eager for Paula to get to this season, because I think Matt Smith's first season has it's moments, but I think Matt Smith shines in 6 & 7. I waffle back and forth between him and Tennant as my favorite Doctor, specifically because of Seasons 6 & 7, though that could also largely be because River's story finally becomes central and is so great. Oh yea, and the intro is weird and offputting.

George Baxter

I'm also a huge Craig Ferguson fan. His Late Night show was so honest and deconstructive. It pains me that Corden got so much more attention; his version is so performative and has no real substance. Ferguson really talked to his guests, he surprised them and had real improvised conversations. But sure, Corden can kinda sing and dance...

George Baxter

I'm surprised about Paula's take on Stephen Moffat; was she prejudiced against him? Because I'd say so far, at least in her episode viewing, that he's delivered on everything he's set up. Why so wary?? I don't love the Moffat disrespect! The man is known for writing some of the best episodes of Doctor Who and some of the most beloved Characters! Captain Jack was introduced in his episodes, River Song!! But people conflate him with bad twists and have decided he's a chauvinist... even though he introduced River, literally the strongest female character in the show so far and an icon! Even in how Rory is betrayed as second fiddle to Amy and how this Doctor is undermined its clear that Stephen Moffat wants a more neutral power dynamic in the Tardis. Remember how badly 10 treated his companions? I don't think the Moffat criticisms are unwarranted, but we've seen what Chibnall's good intentions lead to...

Opti_Frog

Yay, Gallifrey Gals and season 6! One of the strongest DW-seasons ever. The Impossible Astronaut is kind of a remarkable script. Moffat's brain must be like a pinball machine becasue there are so many ideas crammed into this, and yet it's funny, kinda scary, easy to follow and really well acted. The Mrs Robinson joke is one of my biggest laugh out loud moments in all of DW. XD I have never seen that weird Amy-intro before. Surely that's a BBC America thing, because this was when they made a big push to make DW more popular in the US.

Anonymous

We definitely didn't get that weird intro/recap over here in the UK when it first aired, seems like BBC America have been meddling with it again - definitely not how Moffat intended it to be

Opti_Frog

I can absolutely understand some criticisms againt Moffat. If you prefer simple and straightforward storytelling, and you just want the Doctor to fight some monsters, then Moffat won't be your cup of tea because his storylines can be head-scratchingly intricate. And while i understand Paula's point about not being sad about the Doctor's death, i don't really think we're supposed to believe that he's DEAD-dead. I mean, this is true for any heroic fiction. We know that Indiana Jones isn't going to die, that's not where the tension and excitement lies. It's just part of the drama. Who thought that the end of Infinity War was going to stick? ^^

John

If you have time, you should watch "My Sarah Jane: A Tribute to Elizabeth Sladen"

Anonymous

I love the fact that old and young CAD 3rd are portrayed by father and son W. Morgan Sheppard & Mark Sheppard, sadly the former is no longer with us

Bruce Bromley

George Baxter, as can Ferguson. Not only writing the show's theme, as well as his DW tribute song. Remember he was in a band with the 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi.

Bruce Bromley

Is there anyone else having trouble saving the reaction from the Wave link? It plays fine but when I try to download it nothing happens. Have the ladies deactivated the download option? I hope not.

Amy Chlebus

The intro isn't on the DVD Box sets thank God. When I 1st saw this I cried oceans. I am sure I am not the only one. I am sure I am not the only one.

paulh7791

And we are back!! Thank You. Gonna be fun rewatching this season and Paula's take on it!

John

The additional intro is added by the streaming service, I think. I've seen something similar on the Firefly reactions I'm watching on another Patreon channel and it's not on the Firefly DVDs either. I definitely respect you guys wanting to take a break. Not only balancing life/work balance, but also some of these stories are emotional and take some time to process before you're ready to move on. Between seasons/series is a good place to catch a break. I'm sure Kat will want a break after Season 3 of TNG rather than jumping right into Season 4. (especially as long as TNG seasons are)

Steven morgan

This is the first time I’ve seen that awful intro, I first thought I’d fell into a strange parallel universe, now with research I know the intro was only shown in america. Very strange. Love the reaction, of course your not going to cry at the doctors death, because yes you know it’s not true. But I dare you to go back and watch it again another time and not cry. I think the idea of you guys watching rivers time line in order is cool.

Steven morgan

I think your missing the point her take isn’t bad, it’s a fun damn you Moffat thing, Paula is a very clever and intuitive person, so someone who can confuse her is a challenge, also he pulled on her heartstrings with Rory and was trying it again and she was proud that she was ready.

George Baxter

I don't know... Davies didn't receive this much scrutiny even when his episodes were bad! Feels like Paula has some inkling of the Moffat bashing community which is admittedly pretty vocal. I'd say Moffat is as convoluted as Davies was melodramatic. But at their best Davies was an epic dramatist and Moffat was a conceptual genius. I just think people unfairly attribute blame to him. He ran the show for 6 seasons and wrote more episodes than any other writer, including many of the most popular that have ever been produced.

Steven Cooper

I was a little surprised at Paula's lack of surprise at the cliffhanger -- unlike the typical light and stand-alone season opener of the Davies era, here we're given a heavy two-parter to kick off with. Moffat's first season had exactly the same pattern as the four before it with its three two-parters (one a few episodes in, one just after the mid-season, and the finale), but from now on, all bets are off... :-) Such a pity you're watching the defaced version of the episodes. That Amy voiceover was annoying enough when it was first shown, but outside its original context it becomes absolutely wretched. Unfortunately it gets steadily more obtrusive and irrelevant as the season goes on, destroying the impact of just about every pre-titles sequence. Please feel free to talk all over the damned thing every time.

Lloyd B

This is the season they had a major push into the American market. That’s the reason, I think, for the awful addition of the intro before the opening credits. The thought was there would be a lot of new viewers who needed context, but it just gets intrusive and annoying. Best to mute it for 30 seconds or stick your fingers in your ears and go “la-la-la” while it runs! Other than that, I really like this story. The concept of the aliens is very clever, and feeds into the themes of conspiracy and paranoia. Also, the actor playing the elderly Canton Everett Delaware III at the start is actually Mark Sheppard’s father - W Morgan Sheppard. They were originally going to put Mark Sheppard in old man makeup, but he recommended they cast his father instead.

"Moffat is the boy who cried wolf!" Are you sure you don't mean... *puts on sunglasses* ...bad wolf? YEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Amy Chlebus

That's OK if Paula doesn't like Steven Moffat. I love Steven Moffat. I love his writing. Everybody likes different things. There are things that I like that other people don't, and there are things that I don't like that people do. 1 example being they made 10 fall in love with his companion. I personally hate that. That is what made me dislike him and made him my least favorite New Who Doctor. For me, the Doctor is never supposed to fall in love with his companion. They're are only supposed to be close friends and that's it.

Anonymous

I will admit to checking the comments first before writing it. :)

Download isn’t working for me neither

Anonymous

I 100% love Moffat. I think he’s a much better story teller than Davies, and that’s cause I love the twists and turns, etc. But not everyone will. And I can completely understand when Paula said about the boy who cried wolf. I can’t blame her. I probably felt the same way... but I still got emotional cause I chose to live in the moment of the scenes. People have different tastes. For instance... I’ll never understand how people kept going to Transformers movies. But if they like them... they like them.

Anonymous

Oh man. The Silence. I love the Silence. They’re one of my favorite villains. Just because who hasn’t walked into a room and immediately thought “wait. Why did I come in here?” I’ll admit it, when that happens to me now, I just go: “damn it, the Silence.” I’m so excited for what’s to come. These series are some of my favorites because of all the Wibbily Wobbly Timey Whimey stuff. And my favorite line that got no reaction: “Are you really going to shoot me?” “They’re Americans!” “Don’t shoot!” And goodness I love Mark Shepherd. He seems to always show up in a show I love. Who, Supernatural, Leverage, White Collar. I was so excited seeing him the first time.

Stephen Ray

Corden has been in more episodes of Who than Ferguson, though. Still prefer Ferguson.

Stephen Ray

I haven't seen Supernatural, but he was memorable in Battlestar Galactica and Firefly.

Anonymous

Right ! He was " President of the 12 colony" for a short time !

Anonymous

Also [SPOILERS - next episode] easiest hallowe'en costume ever! You also missed out Firefly, Battlestar Galactica & X-Files for Mark Sheppard's previous work. He is the king of nerd-shows.

Anonymous

I love that Paula noticed that the Silents are dressed like Men in Black. Not a lot of people seem to pick up in that. This story plays around a lot with American alien iconography, and the Silents are clearly the Doctor Who explanation for both the “grey aliens” and the “Men in Black.”

Opti_Frog

The question is, did she mean the mythical UFO-cult kind of Men in Black, or was she referring to the Will Smith/Tommy Lee Jones film? ^^

"a little marathon that gets cut into one video" - There are not enough tissues in the world

Red Hunter

Series 6 has begun... I’m so excited!

Anonymous

This and the following episode are one of my favourite openings for Doctor Who. I just think they nail the cinematography, the story, the acting. Its exciting and thrilling and mysterious and everything Doctor Who should be! Not forgetting how wonderfully the cast have settled into their roles. I know series 6 is a bit up and down for some fans, but I totally adore and love it. Can't wait for more!! Also Moffat totally did an interview at the start this saying SOMEONE GONNA DIE Y'ALL! Hard laugh when Paula said that too! Love it girls, great to have you back!

Bruce Bromley

Stephen Ray I consider it a disappointing missed opportunity that Ferguson wasn't asked to be on Who when Capaldi was the Doctor.

Jonny Moonsliver

I dont know if this has been mentioned, but the room that River unlocks in the catacombs in Florida is the same design and make as the prototype TARDIS in The Lodger above Craig (James Corden's) flat, hinting at a connection between the memory aliens and the attempt at a TARDIS perhaps? Wouldn't call it a spoiler, but it is an important clue.

Anonymous

So basically the next time that you walk into a room and can't remember why...look behind you.
