A couple of interesting BTS regarding this episode. I’ll split them: 1. The network was (bizarrely at this point, if you ask me) pleading with the producers to cut it with all the serialization, because serialization was still very unusual on network/basic cable TV outside of soaps. They wanted the show to level-set (get into a spot where they could “hit the reset button” each episode) so that (they felt) people could dip in and BSG would gain new viewers. (They later found that BSG rerun marathons timed around premieres became insanely popular — especially with owners of them newfangled DVR’s — but at this point, if you wanted to catch up, you literally couldn’t, since DVD’s weren’t being released until after the next season began to air. For non-serialized shows, this made sense: they could time previous-season DVD releases with the end of a season for marketing. For a serialized show, it meant you could never catch up.) Anyway, the producers reached a deal with the network: they’d “wrap up” the serialized storyline that began with “33” with this two-parter. Then, after the next episode, they’d shift to a story-of-the-week format “for a while”, before returning to “lighter serialization” later on. So, in the writer’s room, they treated this two-parter as the Season 1 finale. But the “story-of-the-week format” idea was more honored in the breach than the observance. You may not even notice it, since character development and placement of characters on the chess board continues—it’s just not so much ongoing plot threads. In one case, the network even swapped two episodes for some reason, as they often do for non-serialized shows (though with enough notice that the team was able to mostly re-edit around continuity errors by swapping some shots between episodes). But I think even if it’s not _really_ a “story of the week” format—there are some things coming up that have *huge* ongoing implications—I think you’ll notice you do get a bit more breathing room for the next part of S2.

2. This one has to do with Roslin’s ordering Sharon be put out the airlock after promising she wouldn’t. Ronald D. Moore says that Mary McDonnell *really* didn’t like this, and complained it wasn’t true to the character. But he says he told her a president is made president to make the tough choices the people who elected her wouldn’t. He also pointed out that she was beginning to accept herself as a religious figure in the Fleet, and the appearance of another incarnation of the Cylon who shot Adama was the last thing she needed at that moment—until Sharon mentioned the Tomb and then Elosha told her about prophecy speaking of a “lower demon” helping the chosen leader. He told her Roslin-the-person wasn’t doing these things, not really, it was the President/Dying Leader, and Roslin sometimes had to step aside and make choices that, in some sense, she disagreed with in her private capacity. It’s very much a defining moment for Roslin, as she find herself having to make choices she finds increasingly repugnant.
