This one has always left me feeling a bit 'meh' and I'm not sure why. Seeing as it was a last minute replacement, it fits well within the structure of the season. It does a good job of settling in the Kochanski character and giving her screen time so we get to know her a bit better. There is enough here to show she is not a straight Rimmer replacement and is her own character. The jokes are relatively funny (though not as funny - IMO - as the first two eps. Something just feels..... off. The pacing feels out in places. While this is a slower ep, there are lots of silent pauses and filler shots of them crawling around that make it drag. Craig's performance seems off, as already mentioned, and some of his delivery seems like 1st takes. For the most part Kryten's scenes work, certainly when Lister is trying to reassure him and the scene between him and Kochanski at the start. But the character is starting to grate by the end of the ep. I like the balance between pathos and humour that has returned this series but the laughs felt slightly 2nd place in this one. Generally, I put this down to the changing dynamic of the show and the writer(s) trying to get the balance right. I've generally felt that the show (since S3 anyway) has been a bit like the Wizard of Oz. You have Rimmer trying to find his courage (to be the person Ace showed he could be), Kryten in search of a heart (or to be more human) and Cat in search of a brain (well, he would be if he thought it was worth it but he has search a beautiful arse so what else does anyone need?). The Lister is the Dorothy figure, are main point of reference, who brings balance to it all. Lister usually brings the moral compass to the show and will be brave when when there are no further alternatives. He is no Ace Rimmer but will come good when push comes to shove. He allows Holly to diddle with his DNA to try and defeat the Curry Monster, faces down the Inquisitor with a desperate plan once there are no further alternatives, stands up to Hudzen to defend Kryten even though his fear is obvious and won't abandon Rimmer to the Despicable One. And Kryten was the brains who pulled knowledge out of nowhere when needed. Kochanski adds both emotional intelligence and intellectual intelligence to the show, as seen with her efforts to distract Lister in this ep. So that balance is lost slightly in that some of Rimmer's traits are given to Kryten and Lister who have behaved like right dicks so far this season. I think it just took time for the balance to be found so we don't get Kryten aas walking exposition and resolver (like in VI) but Lister doesn't lose his heart as we have seen at times in VII.

Y'know, I was very curious to see what you'd think of Kochanski in this series. After two episodes, I'm amused (and a little delighted) to see your take is more or less like my own. "Fake Kochanski" made me laugh out loud - especially with Paula's delivery. More seriously, I understand what they were going for, but as I mentioned in my comment on Ouroboros, it just doesn't work as intended. The key word to describe series VII, in my opinion, is "uneven". You start off with two superb episodes, Tikka to Ride being arguably one of the best episodes of RD, period, and then there's... there's others. Duct Soup isn't the worst, though. There are some legitimately great moments, like Kochanski basically distracting Lister with his own, internalized homophobia (I cannot believe this is the first time I noticed her calling Lister "hetero boy"....!), and some really strong attempts at fleshing out her character and making her relatable. Unfortunately, you then have moments where she comes off as more of a stereotype of a woman than a real person. It's as though I can see Naylor going "quick - what do women like? Shopping? Cottage cheese? Clothes? Scented baths??" Chloë Annett nails the performance; it's the writing that's the problem. I actually really liked Cat's hearing being a thing, rather than his sense of smell, as cats do have great hearing. But yeah, they do play fast and lose with canon. Which I don't mind as much, in a show with time travel and alternate dimensions, but the characterization is doing some interesting things this series, too. They've made Lister more... toxically masculine, to coin a phrase, which really irks me, and while Kryten's paranoid jealousy is played quite well in this particular episode... yeah. There is better to come, however! *Rimmer salute*
