I'm looking back some my ONEPIECE doujin for future translation projects. And thinking around sound effects letters. Some people gave me an advice that, some comics has notes to sound effects, rather than translate it. In this test panels, I tried it. Mmm... Problem is, if there are so many sound effect letters, I can't add notes to all. Would you tell me your opinion about it?

I think that's a clever idea :) I wouldn't mind you put translation directly on sound effects(just dont make it too big and some outline would do) if there's no space to put notes on.

It is a good idea. Not absolutely critical. But a nice little something you could add in when there is space.

Okay, 'muchi' and 'puri' in this are empathizing how plump and nice Nami's ass is, right? With the translated sound effect notes, I think: 'Damn, that's a sweet ass.' Without the notes, I see how Robin's hand is sinking into the flesh, how the light is reflecting off Nami's ass and the big, round peach shape of it. Without the translated sound effect notes, I think: 'Damn, that's a sweet ass.' So even if I didn't know the sound effects, I can understand what is being conveyed from other things. The 'do-do-n' can similarly be derived from context. From the line around radiating around her ass, Robin's amazement and the size of the sound effect, it's a sound effect for something sudden and surprising. Like a big phat ass being shoved in your face. If doing this is faster than rewriting the sound effects into English, then I'll support it.

I think if you intend to add notes for the sound effects you could put them on a separate page at the end, rather than cluttering up the pages the sound effects are on. They're not vital to understanding the story so I don't think it's absolutely necessary to have translators notes on the same page.

I agree that it's a clever idea! It's not obtrusive and helps make use of extra white space, and when that's not an option putting the translation right on the sound effect like with the "DO~DO~N" above seems to work pretty well.

I agree with this. At the end of the day the sound effect is meant for emphasis and isn't one hundred percent necessary. If you feel the need to change the sound effects to actual english words that flows with the translation properly, but putting them with the Japanese text just sort of clashes and fills the page with unnecessary text.

So here is my opinion, Pretty much how you have here is better. I think you should limit the notes to the first time they are used in the comic Rather then every time. If you do decide to make a full page of notes, give examples of what it looks like from the comic but put this Notes Page in the Front of the book rather then the back.

I recommend looking up some translated works on g.e-hentai (for example, since I know you've visited that site before). In general English translators/editors don't do anything about sound effects on background/outside bubbles, especially if they're just some generic moaning endlessly repeated. Also you might want to look up some editing guides for (hentai) manga, for example on that picture on the second bubble ".... well" should be lower in the bubble (you want the text to be on the center of the bubble). http://prettyanonymo.us/index.php/scanlation-resources/anonblacks-typesetting-guide/ has some great tips
