Hello everyone!

Lemme start with the obvious: the video I posted shows the effect I was fighting with before releasing the latest build. The one on the left was mostly a placeholder, quickly made in 2D in photoshop and would have been too much work to bring up to the same framerate as the rest of the game. It looked ok, but kind of odd if looked at closely. I had an idea to create it in 3D, which I had a rough version of in the middle. It worked, but looked worse than my 2D attempt. Before going back to that, I stuck with it a little longer and learned some new stuff in Unity. The final result is on the right, which looks much more like I wanted it to.

Next I'll need to get it following and protecting the "core" boss enemies, and getting removed when the boss is the only enemy left.

Last thing: just a quick reminder to all $5+ patrons to please submit your idea for this month's request contest. I'll be closing this month's contest at the end of this Saturday so I have time to get my drawing done before the end of the month. Previous post with the link!

Shield Effect Techniques

Showing a few attempts at mimicking the core shield effect in Nier Automata's hacking minigame using different techniques. Left: I drew 2D rings in photoshop and animated them frame by frame. Doesn't look too bad but the problem here was it would have been too much work to make it look at smooth as all the other movement in the game. Middle: I created my own 3D shader and applied it to a default sphere. I guess it has a wonky UV map because you can see the polar distortion. Considered going back to the left version. Right: Fired up blender and exported a perfectly UV mapped sphere, adjusted my shader, and got the results I wanted. You can take a look at the shader graph here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gImiHlDFarc&feature=youtu.be
