Stalk-eyed flies (Diopsidae) are tropical insects that feed mostly on fallen fruits. Females select males according to the length of their eye stalks, and males will "joust" for attention by comparing the width of their eyes with one another. While the males with the longest stalks can be reproductively successful, they also have poor depth perception and difficulty flying, not unlike how deer with the largest antlers risk getting entangled in branches (and shot by hunters)
