When illustrating stories, sometimes it helps to look to other art for inspiration- not to reference the style, content, or even technique- but rather to study how they make you feel. If I'm looking to make a reader feel a certain way, I look for art that makes me feel similarly, and try to deconstruct how that was achieved. It's a pretty open-ended exercise, but I think it's very useful.

This is why, for example, I'll say Moebius is a major inspiration for me, even though my art doesn't really resemble his at all. He's an inspiration in that I look to make readers feel and interact with my stories the way Moebius makes me feel about his stories.
