Researching the differences between the English and Japanese versions of the movies is interesting. For example, according to the director of the movie, Ash never actually died when he was turned into stone, just frozen pretty much. The tears pretty much just "restored" him. Another change was the message of the movie, which was anti-violence in the English ver, but in the Japanese ver it was basically existentialism, the philosophy of free will. Mewtwo isn't revenge crazy in the Japanese, but rather it's questioning it's own existence. Mew is also less benevolent and kind in the Japanese version, but rather more neutral. Mew is seen more like both an Angel and a Devil, pretty much doing good and bad stuff on a whim. In the Japanese, the scientists mention stories of Mew's actions, like causing massive floods or letting crops grow in barren lands. Even stopping Mewtwo wasn't because it was trying to be a hero and stop Mewtwo's "evil" plans, but rather because it saw Mewtwo's mass cloning as an act against nature and that Mewtwo needed to be punished for it. All and all Mew is also just kind of a dick.

Oh yeah, not sure if you guys knew this, but there was a direct sequel TV special of this movie called Mewtwo Returns. It has all you guys wanted, such as making this movie one of the few Pokemon movies to be 100% confirmed canon to the anime. Mewtwo even returns in Episode 46 in Pokemon Journeys, the final season of Pokemon to have Ash as the MC, and features Mewtwo as a major character in that episode.
