Hey everyone! The wait is finally over! From the very first chapter I've seen people debating over what exactly Emma's power armor actually looked like. We got from something as tame as simple exoskeletons to Fallout's power armor, all the way through to the WH's big bulky marines. I've long established the suit as being a cross between the T-45 power armor and the NCR Ranger helmet from Fallout. I've also made mention of its gunmetal blue appearance and the red tinted lenses, with a single rebreathing tube connecting it to the hermetically sealed air filtration system.

To summarize what the suit actually consists of, here's a brief text description to get everyone up to speed on what it's actually like in universe.

  • Starting from the first layer, a relatively thick undersuit is sealed onto the wearer (an undersuit that resembles a neoprene wetsuit in texture and in thickness). This undersuit has a multitude of functions, starting first with the vital sign monitoring and passive health scanning systems, through to both the active and passive thermal control systems, and of course the all important haptic feedback which allows the wearer to 'feel' what the world around them via haptic feedback, mimicking actual touch to about 90% the accuracy of actual touch. It's also where the last line of defense for mana radiation resistance comes in.
  • The second layer is basically a powered exoskeleton that basically 'wraps' around the wearer and acts as the real meat of the armor. It's where the armor's strength, resilience, and raw force comes from as it enhances the wearer's strength, agility, reflexes, and a variety of other physical related aspects.
  • The third layer is the 'oversuit', basically a sort of flight-suit like jumpsuit that is slotted over the exoskeleton frame, sandwiching it underneath. This oversuit acts as a layer of ballistic and heat protection from kinetic and direct energy weapons alike, as well as fire. In addition to this, this is where a lot of the mana radiation resistant properties of the suit are, in addition to thee undersuit of course. It also acts as the anchor point for the armor pieces that attach on to it.
  • The fourth layer if you can even call it that is the armor and helmet, highly advanced metal composites that give adequate protection against even antipersonnel weapons, explosives, and a lot more.
  • There's an extra fifth layer but we won't be seeing that until a bit later. :D

However, I know no description would ever match the power of art. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so I guess this counts as those thousand words!

So without further ado, here it is! As promised here's the artwork I commissioned for the titular power armor from Wearing Power Armor to a Magic School! I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do! It's honestly super on point and very much accurate to what I had envisioned! The artist did an amazing job on this and I cannot thank them and credit their amazing work enough so please check them out!

I also need to say thank you, to everyone. Thank you to everyone for supporting me on this great adventure, and for bringing my world to life bit by bit.

Also yes it's blue.

Kittora

So they literally have no idea what em looks like that will be a fun surprise

Jcb112

That is correct! There's no way you can actually see what's underneath the helmet (oh my god I'm referencing another story by writing that), as even the lenses are tinted to prevent certain types of mana radiation as well! :D All they see is this, and Emma's just stuck inside of that! :D I hope you like how it looks though!

Kittora

Especially considering the big clunky armor they were used to seeing

Jcb112

Yup! Because Emma isn't nearly as large or imposing as the armor haha, the armor adds a good few feet of height as well as mass in general! :D

Christian White

Do you have all the max tolerances of the suit worked out in notes already? Max lifting force, heat resistance, etc? I'm excited to see what the tech is like. I assume that the future tech allows for things like inertial dampeners and such?

Jcb112

I'm working on that! However I'm treading the line carefully when it comes to making hard science decisions on certain aspects of the suit, but it's something I'm trying to work on yeah! Also yes, inertial dampeners are a thing but they're not super advanced just yet, it'll become more pertinent as the series progresses actually! :D

Fogel

They don't even know what she *sounds* like. They could be expecting it to be nearly form fitting, it's doubtful they have an equivalent of power armour.

Jcb112

Very much so! Her voice is indeed being synthesized to a pretty accurate degree through her vocoder! But yeah, they literally have no clue what she looks or sounds like! In many cases, like with Ilunor, they might even assume she's just a golem of sorts! Just an suit of armor brought to life! To that ends, they won't even get to see what she looks like in the tent! The only way to really see her is if she like live streams herself from her tent to other people, which is something I potentially have planned but I'm still setting up! :D

Kittora

They absolutely don't. They just think it's knight armor after all.

Fogel

Actually, they *do* know Emma is a girl. After all, there was the offer to split the rooms per gender.

Jcb112

Yeah they have that going for them but that was only because the IAS sent the bare minimum of details regarding the student they were planning to send. That's how the guy calling out names at the Grand Hall knew of her name and rank in writing! :D
