Your editor is right when he says that we all tend to want to see romantic relationships between certain characters in the story. But he exaggerates on certain points. Yes, love exists in One Piece. Obviously. This is not a universe in which babies are delivered by storks. Sexual relationships or attractions are even mentioned from time to time. That being said, it always has either a plot or comedic aim. And it's still outside of the Straw Hats' relationships. When Oda was involved in the production of the live action, he mentioned to Matt Owens (the screenwriter) that he did not want to see any romantic relationships between the crew members. Matt Owens supported this by saying that the crew members had a family dynamic. Even the love Sanji feels for Nami and Robin has a comedic aim. A romantic relationship between Luffy and Nami is just a fantasy of some people xD They clearly have more of a big sister/little brother relationship than anything else. It was not the same for Naruto. Kishimoto introduced the notion of love triangles and romantic interests early in the story. So we knew that several characters present in the Chunin exam were going to end up together. Shikamaru and Temari, it was obvious.
