Theres a little bit more to the "she wasn't supposed to die" line then just that she was too strong to have been killed. When the King returned: the powers he stole were from those he deemed "unworthy". Considering the races value the concept of purity so much; this essentially amounts to "every one that is half-blood or less" It's why Ryu was spared: he's a pure blood, and his son is 75%, so he was also spared, but his wife, a half-blood, was killed. Ichis mom *was* a pure blood. By all accounts, she should have also survived that event. But because of White, the King deemed her "impure" and stole her powers. It didn't make a difference that she was in combat at the time: if the King deemed you unworthy: you were going to die and give your powers to him so he could be reborn. The fact that she was facing the Fisher just meant her death happened faster.
