Using the Gedo Statue actually uses a lot of energy. Madara wants to reserve as much chakra as possible for when the Ten-Tails is revived, which is why he retreated even though he had the upper hand. If you rewatch the scene where Madara declares war at the 5 Kage Summit, there is a hint as to what the Gedo Statue is. I'd rather not spoil that if you'd rather figure it out for yourself.

Guerrilla/Gorilla That was a joke right ^^? And about the Statue well there were hints about what it really is but it wasen't explained in detail yet so it would be a spoiler to tell. What I can say though is that its eyes were closed during the entire fight (and we saw again and again that with each beast absorbed it actually awakened one of its eyes each) so Madara was holding back power here, like big time.

By the way, about why Tobi didn't finish off the rest of Darui's group. At the Kage summit, he said that he wants to create a world without violence, war and death. He has now gained the chakra of all the tailed beasts and plans to complete the Tsukinome project. I doubt he wants to kill thousands of people just for fun. It is pointless.
