This is basically what a business man with a Death Note would do, kill for profit. Whereas we have a (former) highschooler who hasn't been too exposed to the adult life and doesn't know the true value of money yet.

Before getting the Death Note, Light was a gifted teenager with a great sense of justice and morality. He is the son of the Chief of Police and has helped solve several cases. BUT he was bored to death because he was too gifted. The Death Note has become his reason for living and a way to put his genius to work. To sum up, Light is a teenager with a great sense of justice and morals who was corrupted by the Death Note. And this corruption was only possible because Light was immature, and possibly even on the verge of suicide. When you look at his face at the start of the first episode, he doesn't look like a youngster who wants to enjoy life. He had no purpose because everything seemed too simple to him (he's super smart, athletic and handsome). That makes him a kind and condescending jerk in some way but that's what it is. Besides in this episode, I think the uncorrupted Light is very motivated by the idea of ​​catching Kira because the case is facinating him in a positive way.

24:17 True the death note does not change your personality, but power does corrupt, and ownership of the death note does give you quite a lot of power. I find it believable that Light would have a much higher moral standard before finding the death note than after using it for several months.
