So something that wasn't clarified is the reason why Luffy asked Kaku "how old are you". Usopp says that he 'talks like an old man', and what that means is that he uses a very overly polite form of grammar that in Japanese is mostly only used by elderly Japanese people. The dub actually also has a pretty good take on this; in English they just have him use very old fashioned phrases that make him sound like someone from the 50's.
