They don't touch on this point within the context of the show, but Aang being naturally gifted at water bending isn't just a coincidence. Look at how Aang moves when he airbends; it's different for sure, but there's still plenty of similarities between what he does and water bending. The Avatar cycle of Air -> Water -> Earth -> Fire is designed so that wherever the next Avatar start in the cycle, the first new element they learn is always the most similar to the one they were born with.
