"Unhinged" is absolutely the word. 😆 Glad y'all enjoyed this season, there's a lot to love beyond the Unalaq/Vaatu.

President Raiko is worse than the mayor from Jaws. There, I said it.

excellent reaction and discussion toward the season. love that you say this show is your "new religion" because these shows and their morals literally raised me and many others. I'm really glad that you were able to fully experience it without the weight of it being endlessly trashed on in the fan base. That being said, I would like to share my gripes with the season as someone who grew up watching and a huge fan of both shows since its airing. I love the themes introduced toward the start - I actually think Unalaq was far more compelling before Vaatu entered the picture. The spiritual decline of the south seemed like a legitimate issue and for a short period of time we could see at least where Unalaq was coming from. Around the time of the Wan episodes, they drop all pretenses of making him an interesting character and as you noted, he just kinda sucks and his only traits are that he's arrogant and narcissistic. This was an incredible season for the main characters, particularly Tenzin, Korra, and surprisingly Jinora, but I can't say the same about the rest of the cast. It feels like Asami got sidelined pretty hard this season, Mako continues to suck, and even Bolin because really annoying at points in this season. Also Lin is barely in it, and not as fun as she usually is. Varrick is perfect, no notes. Stuff like this is going to happen with you have a giant cast of characters but i find it to be balanced way better in the other seasons. All that being said, when those Wan episodes dropped, my 13 year old brain exploded, and I'll never forget how compelling this season was on a week-to-week basis. But yes, it only gets better and yeah buckle up.

Man I'm so hyped for season 3! Easily my favorite season hands down. Season 2 was always my least favorite but after watching it again now for the first time since it aired It's better than I remember, you guys had a lot of good points. Not sure if that moves it up but i've gotten a better appreciation for it.

Great reactions. S2 the weakest season but lots of good stuff in it. You're gonna love the rest of the show!

Kamau Catching

this is one of the best reactions to this episode I've seen. I ranked this as the fifth best episode of the season but now I think it should be higher 😂Many people let comment sections and other peoples inadequate analysis affect their opinion of the season. I personally think book 3 and 4 are better but I actually would say season two is better than season 1 and I think season 1 is great on its own. When you guys kept talking about how beautiful the episode is I decided to focus on the visuals that I don’t really pay attention to. Personally this fight always gave me avatar season 1 finale vibes because of the blue giants and fighting on the ocean and making these two episodes visually 1 of the best episode of their respective series. Can't wait for Season 3. It's crazzyyy thanks for the content!

My only complaint with the wrap up to this season was how trivial Unalaq and Vaatu made combining seem... Wan and Rava spend a long period of time merging and having to break apart and getting used to being merged... granted you could say that it was 100% touching the portal energy during convergence that did all the work, but I just didn't like how that felt... after making the merging for the first avatar seem like such a thing done in desperation to fight vatu and maybe even that it would be impossible without all their time spent fused together already. Vaatu just simply flies into Unalaq and in secs they make a brand new dark avatar who somehow needs no training to master even greater powers than we've ever seen an avatar do spiritually... leaving the avatar just copying him at best to take him down only by the help of Jinora.... it all just felt a bit bad to me compared to the usual mastery we see in this show. My favorite char and story arc in this show is actually Varrick... I just find him super original and I've never quite seen anything like his personality but even when he is bad he's fun.

I’d say season 2 is my least favorite, but I love all of Korra and think it’s better than 90% of the stuff out there even at its low points. That said, season 3 is fucking nuts and I’m looking forward to you getting to experience it.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the season. I think it's not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be, but it's not perfect. First off, Unaloq as a villain is kind of over the top and corny. Like he's just suddenly evil for the sake of being evil? I have mellowed out over the years on how this season wraps up but I, like many Avatar fans, am still pretty mad about the writers deciding to completely destroy the spirits of the past Avatars. That connection was a huge part of what made this world special before. I personally felt like it was just a step too far. Lastly I think that the whole kaiju battle thing, with giant glowing unaloq/vaatu, giant glowing blue Korra, and Jinora floating down from heaven glowing like she's Jesus - it all just feels very not Avatar to me... It's always been a very mystical world while still managing to be grounded, that was just so off tone in my opinion. It's all done amazingly visually - the colors and animation are all crazy awesome - but they strayed away from the core of what makes the series so grounded and special, which is the 4 elements. As soon as they start having crazy kaiju spirit battles is where they start to lose me. Like for example, Aang at the end of season 1 of ATLA does a similar thing, but his body is still his normal body. He is just floating in a giant mass of spiritual water that he is bending. Meanwhile, Korra was like astral projecting her spirit into a giant glowing version of herself, she teleports and then is shot through the sky like a spirit missile to crash into Unaloq, and then they shoot spirit power beams out of their chests at each other that collide..... Like if some people like it, that's fine, but it just doesn't fit for me. Thankfully, the show only goes up from here. Seasons 3 and 4 are the best.

Mako got done dirty by the writers with all this romance garbage. It was just plain bad writing and an unnecessary love rhombus thing. Another reason why people dislike Book 2. Bad villain, bad romance.
