When I saw this at the cinema, the first time I saw the child in the prison I straight away thought “hang on, that’s a girl with a shaved head” but I didn’t put it together until later when they showed her escaping, and kept talking about her ‘protector’, and he was fighting the other inmates just like Bane, then it clicked. Also, that scene at the end when the engineers tell Lucius Fox that Bruce had done a software patch on the autopilot, let’s you know that he must’ve stuck it on autopilot once he was clear of the city and ejected from the batwing, although swimming back in that suit would’ve been a hassle! However, Nolan loves to have an ambiguous, open-for-interpretation ending, so it could be that Alfred was just imagining seeing him at the end, and Bruce did really give his life for Gotham…
