Honestly, I think Miguel was right about Jack kinda saving the role of Best Man for Nicky... It wasn't that he didn't WANT Miguel as his Best Man or anything like that. I think it was more about what Beth was saying to her Mum about letting go of all these things you imagine for the future. Whenever he thought about his future Wedding growing up, Jack would've imagined Nicky there as his Best Man. And then the War happened, and that was traumatic and awful and just destroyed that. It wasn't that he was planning to go find Nicky and ask him to be his Best Man instead, it was more that it was a reserved spot in his heart. Miguel was his Best Man, but he couldn't give him the official title because he'd already given that to Nicky a long time ago. And I think calling Miguel his Best Man would've made it all too real for him that his brother wasn't going to be there, and that everything that happened in Vietnam really happened. So I think it was probably a mix of wanting his brother there but not feeling able to have him there because of everything that happened, and also kinda a result of PTSD and being unable to truly deal with everything. We saw how much Jack loved Nicky. He said it himself that he practically raised him. As much as he loved Miguel, and as much as we all love Miguel, I don't think that Jack's love for Miguel can come close to the love he had for Nicky. And that is why I think Miguel was right. It's literally nothing to do with Miguel or his friendship with Jack, it's all about Nicky and the love and all the issues that they had in the end... And the grief. Jack told everyone that Nicky was dead because it was easier than telling them the truth of what happened, because he never actually dealt with it. After a while of telling people someone is dead, along with not seeing them, they're going to just become dead. Not literally, of course. But that doesn't erase the grief. And a lot of people do that with their Best Man or Maid of Honour. If they had a brother or sister or best friend who died, they won't have anyone else in that place either...
