I always really like that train scene at the beginning- Lip watching the people change as they move from one side of Chicago to the other- going from middle class 'respectable' looking people to those who do manual work and people who drink on the train. I think it's meant to be Lip looking at the life he's had a taste of and then going back to what he grew up with- where the kids do nothing but drugs. College Lip doesn't really fit in either world anymore.
