Fyi Hattie McDaniel was the first African American person to win an oscar. She won for her portrayal of “Mammy” in Gone with the Wind. That character would eventually become the blueprint for a lot of black characters in the golden age of Hollywood and is essentially a racist caricature/trope used in media even today still. So when the director tells Camille to change how to say her line and “think what would Hattie McDaniel do” he’s essentially telling her to play more of a black stereotype.
