Mr Trick was a red herring - a trick, if you will. Also, the Buffy/Faith storyline isn't just a simplistic Good Slayer/Bad slayer thing. It shows what Buffy could have been if she weren't so fortunate. She's got a mother who is alive and who loves her, friends, she had a relatively privileged upbringing in a stable home...etc. Faith had none of that. Who knows how she would have handled accidentally killing a human if she had felt like anyone in her life would have truly supported her - if anyone in her life prior to that point had ever supported her? She had no reason to feel like the scoobies would protect her like they'd protect Buffy, because she was made to feel like an outsider. She was living in a sleazy motel at age 17, for goodness sake. No one even offered to house her. It's really not as cut and dry as her just being some kind of intolerable arsehole. She's clearly had a hectic life. It doesn't *excuse* her, but it does make her actions *understandable*.
