I actually prefer this episode over the pervious because it moves the plot forward quicker and introduces Azula's friends Mai and Ty Lee. Ty Lee joined Azula because her friend was making her show dangerous and was manipulating her to join. Not all Fire Nation are stupid this make plague was because it's still a humorous kid's show. This episode not focusing as much on Katara and Sokka was because it's focus was Omashu itself and Azula's team to establish for later. Also funny how you mention all the shows and movies it reminds you of (like Game of Thrones) but, Avatar came first so if anything they could have copied from Avatar.

i love this episode. maybe cause I love azula and her team. and i lowkey had a crush on ty lee as a kid (still do tbh).

Ty Lee joins because she's being threatened by Azula. After putting her in danger during the show, Azula says "I can't wait to see how you'll top yourself tomorrow" Which implies that Azula was going to do the same thing over and over again until Ty Lee either got seriously hurt or decided to go with her. Ty Lee chose the latter.

Also Azula chose her because she temporarily remove someone's benders through the use of "Chi-Blocking".
