The Fire Nation wiped out Aangs entire people, and basically the air temples are one of the things that are left of his people, just like Appa and Momo. You also notice that on Aang's first arrival back to the Northern Air Temple, he was pretty disappointed on how the temple changed. In the start of the episode, they were listening to airbender stories, and Aang realized that there were people living at the Northern Air Temple, but it wasn't what he expected, which made him feel kind of down.

Though it works on both levels Aang doesn't want a sacred air temple changed because it is the last part of who he is. However the people living there are refuges from the fire nation looking for place to live. The inventor just wants a nice place for people like his son to live and strive. You have to give credit to him he isn't intentionally trying to hurt anyone.
