This is one of my favorite episodes of the show, even though it is technically filler. Despite not having much forward plot momentum it still a well made episode that has amazing costumes, sets, lighting, actin, etc. The whole thing is just a nice change of pace of pace from the usual structure.

Adam is Magic

Episodes 4.20-4.24 are all good.

i actually hated this episode...i don't think i even finished it. But it's just not my type. Amazing idea, cool concept, just not my cup of tea, but i admire that they went for it.

It's funny you say at least it's memorable because I barely remember this lol

Miranda

The song is Ride with the Tide by Emilie Mover.

Zakiya Davis

I rewatch this episode all the time. It’s probably my one of the last episodes I loved

Hey I'm new to Patreon, and so haven't really commented before, because I feel that sometimes comments get lost on the youtube side of things, but now that I am a Patreon I did want to comment a little on Alison. Alison was a Bitch and there is no denying that, but when a lot of people talk about things she did they forget the underlying things that were happening at the time. For instance Alison did blackmail Aria's father, but she was being stalked and threatened at the time and afraid for her life. Alison did threaten to tell Spencer's sister about her relationship with Ian, but Ian was dating Alison too at the time and making her feel important, in that case the grown man pursuing underage girls is at fault. Alison did tell Emily that she was just practicing when they were together, but Alison also made the first move, and no one talks about the fact that Emily was with Ben and the time and as far as Alison knew had started sleeping with him. Alison blinded Jenna, but that was an accident, she threw a stink bomb, she had no idea that Jenna had film development chemicals in the garage. So what we have left is that Alison was a bully and a bitch to Hannah, Paige, Lucas, and Mona in particular (and arguments could be made about Hannah when you ask how a then 13/14 year old Alison knew enough about bulimia to teach Hannah and if Alison was trying to hurt or help Hannah in her own fucked up way). No matter how horrible she was to others she didn't deserve to be buried alive and go on the run at 14 (I think... the shows timeline is hard). She didn't deserve to be stalked and threatened at 13 (as seen in the prequel Halloween episode). She was a messed up girl with control issues dealing (badly) with real life dangers much more serious than someone her age should have had to deal with and it that should be kept in mind when thinking back to her past crimes and misdeeds.

Also I love the reaction, I have always thought the same about the episode and sorry for the essay I wrote on this.

To be honest I think it actually goes both I think that while Alison was being stalked, controlled, etc. from multiple she still did of awful things on her own so she isn't fully reprehensible. Plus there were times when she went farther than just mean popular girl, she was borderline sociopath at times.

It's interesting to me how much of a literalist TV watcher you are - this episode is totally filler plot-wise, but I've always interpreted it as a deep dive into Spencer's psyche and in many ways into the psyche of the show, and in that sense it's self-reflexive, whacky, and thematically vital. Like Norman Buckley (a frequent PLL director) said once: "the most interesting thing about Pretty Little Liars, to me, is certainly not the plot". If you only care about stripped back, literal plot points, then you're missing out in my opinion.

Adam is Magic

I think for one thing that Joe might not even realize that the drugs Spencer was using to help her focus have caused to create since dreamscape this her mind is all over the place. It's a form of self relocation and realization on trying to putting the pieces to the mystery together.
