Canaries usually lay 1-2 eggs during/right after each heat whether they get impregnated or not. After laying there's a 1-week window where the embryo hasn't started developing enough to see (via candling) if the egg is fertilized or not. During this time it's considered just fine to crack the egg/eggs if you don't want to raise offspring for whatever reason.

They have it a lot easier than humans, that's for sure, haha Good way to keep population numbers going too high too. Only have kids when you want em :3

The most important question: Is it considered taboo to eat unfertilized eggs? Both your own, and others'. Just smashing them seems wasteful. I shouldn't look at porn when I'm hungry, all I can think about is "that's a huge omelet".

That is something I’ve been wondering myself! I think for the first week the egg is considered personal property of whoever laid it. Eating someone else’s egg without permission would definitely be considered rude but making a big ol’ pan of scrambled eggs out of your own egg is maybe fine?

This is the greatest thing ever 😻

It definitely would be a good way to preserve the nutrients from the egg, which would be an important survival trait for those living where food is scarce.

that's what I was thinking too, can't stop your body from wasting nutrients to make a big huge egg that isn't even fertilized, but you can at least try to get some of them back
