My own background and experience was so similar - I was way too young to watch the film on release, so I collected Starburst issues, bought the graphic novel (which the newsagent thought was a bit too graphic !) and read the ADF novelisation. Finally, Fox re-released it in the cinema, allegedly to "prove there was no demand for a sequel" and I managed to blag my way into that, although I think the ticket girl just took pity on me and my wispy 15 year old beard. And my experience with Alien Isolation? I have a copy and I've never loaded it. Too scared.
