Ch-ch-changes - important, please read!! (Patreon)
Content
Just to explain: this video is my new style YouTube trailers - but I'll talk more about that in a bit.
Firstly, I want to thank you all for your continued support - both in terms of funding the work and all your encouragement.
As many of you know, at the end of February YouTube deleted my channel. It straight up sucked BUT it has forced me to have a really good think about business continuity and how robust the project is.
I've come up with a plan, which I'll try for the next few months and then amend and revise as necessary.
So in terms of business continuity, I've been focussed on two key areas - revenue and marketing. Previously, I had all my eggs in single baskets - I relied on YouTube for marketing and Patreon for community and revenue. Clearly, I need to broaden that out.
PATREON
First of all I want to say this loudly and clearly - I'm not going to change what I post here on Patreon. In terms of frequency and how extreme it is, everything stays as it is. If anything, you will be getting more content and a broader range.
Secondly, and perhaps most importantly to you guys, Patreon will continue to be the ONLY place where fans can stream and download my new films.
GUMROAD
I'm going to revisit my Gumroad store and start showing it some love. In short, my Gumroad will be a clip store but it will only sell films from the Grindhouse North archive. The archive is big so it will take a while to upload all the videos, but my plan is to have six-month gap between a new film being released on Patreon and then being available to buy on Gumroad. Having done my research into other producers, my clips will be between $20-$30 each - which will really hammer home the value on being a patron. For example, on a month where I release 5 films, a Super Fan will get over $100 worth of films for just $25!!!!!
GRINDHOUSENORTH.COM
I'm currently working on a website, which should be live in the next couple of weeks. It's an information site and is really a place where I can host my own trailers along with some other useful bits of info such as a blog, how people can book customs, available actors, etc. Having my own site will mean that people will always be able to find me if other platforms get deleted etc. Fans will not be able to purchase films from the site, it's really just a promotional, informational platform.
YOUTUBE
My new YouTube channel is up and running, I've just not posted anything there yet, but feel free to pop over and subscribe. Naturally, the nature of what I post there will be dramatically different from what I did before. As well as the much shorter, less revealing trailers, I will include cast interviews, tutorials, behind the scenes looks, gear breakdowns, informational stuff, etc. The best of that content, I will post on Patreon as well.
TWITTER & INSTAGRAM
If you don't already, you should follow me on Twitter and/or Instagram. On those platforms, I post images while I'm actually shooting as well as some the day after. I don't post those images on Patreon mainly due to the gap between shooting and releasing. I'm also conscious of filling up the Patreon feed with too much stuff other than videos and polls, because I know Patreon isn't the best platform for scrolling through loads of posts.
PATREON TIER CHANGES
It's clear that across a month I will have many more jobs to do and new types of content to create. Also, after having done some research into what other producers charge, I'm making a small change to readjust the value of the tiers. At the moment I release 3 videos available to all patrons to stream, Psycho Killers can download those 3 films and they also get an extra film to stream and download. Super Fans get all that, plus an extra one or two films to stream and download. From next month, I need to make that simpler. So there will still be 3 films released for all tiers to stream, Psycho Killers will be able to stream and download those three films. And Super Fans will get an extra 2 films (at least) to stream and download. Having checked the market, I still believe each tier represents crazy good value - especially when you consider that the ability to stream the archive releases shot up in value after YouTube deleted my channel.
