In classic, time-traveling, Cup-of-Jones style we jump back 24 hours to when I recorded the VO for our Witcher III: Blood & Wine review. For the first time since I started this review VO racket I've recorded myself reading a script, exclusively for you lovely Patrons. First I take 20 minutes to record the VO, and at the end you can revisit the review we just posted while watching me read at the same time.

I've had this idea ever since we started Easy Allies, and I intended this to be a bonus episode this week, but I may not get to another before tomorrow - July 4th. I hope you enjoy this behind-the-scenes look at whatever the heck my face is up to when I do voice-over. The next episode of Cup of Jones will be devoted to answering the show's backlog of questions. Thanks to everyone that submitted one or more over the past few weeks.

Have a great weekend!

Such a great idea for a bonus cup o' jones!

Awesome episode jones, ive always wanted to see the master at work, and how you do the voice overs, really apprciate you letting us in to your garage, and see how its really done... you truly have a great radio voice, and more behind the scene episodes would be awesome, maybe how you decided what videos you put together to show a review! EZA is life, that is all

Anonymous

In fact, when you spend time listening to the review- it's amazing to see how well edited the videos are. Great work, Allies.

Anonymous

Brandon! Man....after listening to your voice for almost 10 years this was just so cool to see. Thanks a lot.

Anonymous

This video truly shows how much you guys really care about the games we play. Really emphasizing quality in the writing as well as the delivery of each review. Keep up the great work and thank you for showing us the behind the scenes in your review process.

Anonymous

Well done! Really appreciated the insight into VO work. I'll take your lessons and apply them to my work!

Anonymous

Really great episode Jones, it's really cool to see how much work you guys put into these reviews. Amazing job as usual!

Brandon K Gann

Thanks for doing this Mr. Jones! I've always wondered what you would do if you messed up a read and this was an awesome glimpse in how you do VO. In the PIP, I thought it would be really cool to put a number in the take window to differentiate which take you chose. I couldn't tell the difference between each two successful takes. I understand that would've been unnecessary work so I'm not bummed its not there, but again, I don't know the difference between successes. Also knowing when to accentuate with game music or dialogue for pacing is fantastic in addition to having clips pop up the moment you are talking about a specific thing like a cut to a building when you say "architecture." A happy Independence Day to you as well and stay Easy fellow Ally.

Anonymous

yes! I was freaking out over this almost as much as you guys did with the Resident Evil VII reveal. seriously. this was brilliant, brandon. :D also that thumbs up totally should've been kept in for the final cut.

Anonymous

Great idea Jones, I did some V.O for videos on my youtube channel "projects" before, I like that work so it's always interesting to see a master doin his work : )

Anonymous

This was really cool.

Eric Estrada

Hi Brandon, has it ever happened that while reading the script for a review of a game you had zero interest in, it convince you of playing it or at least make you curious of giving it a chance, or vice-versa, that it turned your hype away from a game you were highly expecting?

Anonymous

Fantastic! I love behind the scenes type content.

Eric Estrada

Also, I love how Lightning is creeping from the wall just to make an appearance , after being locked away in the bathroom during e3,

This is really great Brandon. It really makes it clear how much work actually goes into getting VO that fits the review. It'd be cool if you found a way to make this (or portions of it) public after some period of time, as IMO it's really useful for showing respect for some of EZA's most important content. Your voice is so iconic for this group, showing this type of thing seems like it'd be useful for growing support. But I'm definitely glad to get sneak peek too!

Anonymous

It's always nice listening to the reviews you do Brandon, but we forget sometimes how much work you put into. We appreciate all the efforts and dedication you and the guys put into every video, it does make us feel like a part of the party. Thank you for doing this video to show us the weird faces you make hahaha! Have a safe 4th!

Anonymous

That was super interesting! Thank you for the special treat!

David Rodríguez Madriñán

That was reaaaally cool. I hope in a future Cup of Jones you can do a similar thing but about the editing, choosing the best footage for each part of the review and such.

Anonymous

This was fantastic to see. While I wouldn't go so far as to call for it to be a regular addition to the roster due to the added effort, these behind the scenes bits, diving more into what goes into EZA, are really interesting and enjoyable. I hope we can see some more in the future, maybe involving audio and video setups, or a look into what goes into an actual edit of a show or a review (for example, I would love to know how much material you need to go through to cut a review). Definitely something to look forward to.

Anonymous

Joined the Patreon once I read the title of the show thinking that Brandon was diving into porn. A little disappointed, but good Witcher 3 review none the less. Cock tease.

Anonymous

Thanks for the peak behind the scenes Brandon, that was awesome :).

Wow Jones you are REALLY good at cold reading. I can barely get through 2 sentences without stumbling when I have to read out loud. Although, since you've been doing it for so long, I guess it's an acquired skill.

Anonymous

That was a great episode. I loved the behind the scenes. Followed by the picture in picture with the final product. Thanks.

Anonymous

Love it, thanks for the behind the scenes of production with tips and tricks. Really appreciate the content. I'd love more of the behind the scenes content like this, it's really amazing to see how you guys do this. It was Auto-Magical up until this point, love the insight. Keep up the great work and continue smiling Jones :)

Anonymous

Cup of jones makes you thinj of porn??? I think you need to get laid or something. Lol

Anonymous

Awesome episode, love the behind the scenes! Great seeing you at work.

Anonymous

Great, interesting episode, thank you for the insight and behind the scenes look.

Robert I.

Brandon, I'm still watching this episode, but this WHAT I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO SEE!!!!! Thank you!

Anonymous

Love this! Great idea Brandon!!

Anonymous

Loving the show Jones. The quality is definitely on the rise here at Easy Allies!

Anonymous

Really great episode! Thanks for the cool look into how you do VO for reviews.

Anonymous

I think it quite ungracious to nitpick such a generous added perk to the usual professional steel of your reviews, but it's a measure of how much I enjoyed this look into the process that I'd like to suggest that if you ever get the chance to do it again, that when you do the picture in picture overlay you add some text over the little Brandon box to specify which take you picked, a simple "Take 1" or "Take 2." That way, we can more easily tell which one you picked.

Daniel Murray

Appreciate you Brandon. Thanks for all your hard work on this great content. Proud to be an Ally!

Anonymous

Always great to see a professional at work. Best in the biz.

Anonymous

this could be its own show. I love it

Adam Mullany

Excellent video Jones - maybe in the future you could film the entire review process?. Show an EZA reviewer witting the review, debating the score and then what happens when they send it to you : do you "review the review" or check for improvements that could be made before recording the VO?. Then you could show the editing process to finish the video. Just an idea!

Gan Khef

Great idea for a COJ, loved it. Always cool to see a professional at work.

Anonymous

Thank you Brandon for this video! Last semester at university I had to create a short (~3 min) video about the Spanish Civil War and Anarcho-Syndicalism and upload it to YT. Considering english is not my first language it was quite hard^^. Recording that VO made me feel clunky and inept since I had no comparison. Watching and listening to you showed that it is actualy as hard as I experienced it, and I still learned a lot from you so that next time hopefully will be better. :)

Anonymous

This is beyond awesome Jones! Thank you so much. Love these "behind the scenes" content. Keep up the good work guys:-D L&R

Anonymous

Hi there Brandon! Could there be a show for the 10th Easy Allies member? Sophie of course! :-) A 1-2 minute clip of Soph being her adorable self. :-)

Anonymous

Thanks Brandon! This was a nice surprise peek behind the curtains. It was fun seeing you mess it up and then process it and maybe change the stress the second time. And I've been meaning to finally start B&W this week, I've waited for July.

Anonymous

Those fat paragraphs are intense. One mistake and its game over :D

Anonymous

Very cool Brandon. How many times had you read that review before you did this VO? I'm impressed with your ability to read it so quickly and apply appropriate intonations throughout as you go so I'm curious whether that's practiced or whether you can just do that on the fly.

Great!!! Really Great always wanted to see this

The Cup of Jones video's are worth a Patreon plede on their own.

Jones, you mention that Bloodworth writes "big paragraphs" for his reviews. Do all of the Allies have unique writing style? Do you think you could tell who wrote a review just from the style alone? L&R -Walter

I never get tired of hearing Brandon Jones's voice, the guy just has a gift.

Anonymous

Thank you for sharing this experience with us. It is not every day that one can gain a peek into the workings that go into making art and experiences that just feel automagical to the uninitiated. However, I would like to address a bit that really irked me when listening to the review. The region Blood & Wine plays in is Toussaint (French meaning "All Saints") not Touissant. This made it clear to me that the person reading the writing hasn't played the game/content (yet ;) ) which took me a bit out of the narration. Might I suggest that you ask Allies to send you a small excerpt of the audio that goes along with the names so you can get a better idea of the phonetics involved? Thank you and Bloodworth for, yet another, first class review.

Anonymous

It's fascinating seeing reviews parsed this way. I wouldn't mind watching Jones voice a Huber review just to see the contrast with Blood's.

EasyAllies

That was a spelling error on my part. However, one thing I actually appreciated is that it's spoken a bit differently by different characters. I think the way Brandon says it falls into an acceptable range, even if it's not quite how a French person would say it. -Bloodworth

Brandon I hope you can read this, I would normally never ask for something like this, but the circumstance is complicated. I am Venezuelan Easy Allie supporter who has been with you guys ever since the day GT said was going to close, was one of the founders of the uneasy alliance in reddit (say founder Because I was part of the chat when we decided to create the post). However I am living in UK, the situation of my home country is incredible bad and I have a close friend there with Brain Cancer and needs an operation URGENTLY, unfrotunately the amount of money needed in my country is simply out of their league. Is around 8000 Pounds, money I don't have. I am not asking for money to the easy allies, what I am asking if for help. I am thinking about creating a Ebay Auction for my PS4 20th Anniversary edition (Never used complete in box) and I would like to know if it would even possible for you guys to say something about in one of your shows. I can provide you with proof, medical records, anything you need. my twitter is @angelonigro you could add or follow me and then in private set everything in motion. I WILL completely understand if this for some reason is not possible or you consider this not viable for the Easy Allies, I am just in the desperate zone knocking every door I can, Thanks.

Anonymous

I really, really enjoyed watching you work, it reminds me of the work I do editing my videos. It's so cool to see that there are things that I do that other people do, and it is nice to see the experience you have. I will take what you have shown and learned from it. I do have one question, what program do you use to take and edit audio? I'm slowly upgrading my software and equipment to make my reviews sound and look more professional. Thank you for all your hard work and happy Fourth of July!

Anonymous

Thanks Jones! This was interesting to see and hear you comment on your work :)

Anonymous

As someone who is working on a proper way to read from a script I found this very helpful! Thanks Brandon!

Anonymous

This was really cool! It was good to see how the magic happens. I know nothing about voice over and so it was cool to learn a bit about it

Anonymous

Brandon, at what point in your life did you realize that you had such an epic voice that goes so well as a VO? Also, are you like many who hate hearing their own voice, especially while editing? People tell me I have a good voice whenever I do presentations/lectures, etc., but I cannot stand the sound of my own voice, especially if I have to do any editing. Lastly, when is the beard coming Brandon Jones? An epic beard to go with an epic voice.

Anonymous

Great stuff, Jones! I'd love to see a stream of Geralt decorating his home lol. Not kidding.

Anonymous

This was a pretty cool look behind the scenes. Thanks for sharing, Brandon!

warren blyth

super cool. I'd love to see something (someday) like a director's commentary, pointing out what you value in the performance. I've recorded VO for many projects in an educational environment (not pro). but when I go back and listen to multiple takes of the same thing, I'm usually overwhelmed by all the little nuances in each. Find it impossible to decide which is a better take. end up flipping a coin. Very curious how pro audio folk make the call. (also curious if you go back and delete or dampen big breathe intake sounds. some coworkers want to delete them all. others think it feels more real to leave them in, but will turn the volume down so they're more subtle. meh?)

Anonymous

Honestly, the "boring," monotone reading of the reviews is what initially made me a fan of GT reviews (that and the incredibly detailed reviews and how they were/are written). I'm so glad this format has continued to EZA. Your reviews really set themselves apart over the likes of IGN, etc., because they sound more objective whereas other outlets review games on a more personal level.

Anonymous

Great episode. Very interesting to have a peek behind the curtain!

Anonymous

The voice you're now hearing is Brandon Jones, we spared no expense.

Anonymous

I hope you don't stress yourself out with 2 CoJ , I think it's OK to miss an episode when real life circumstances happen.

Anonymous

I find myself smiling the entire time... what the hell is wrong with me? LOL

Anonymous

As someone who recently started to record VO for my new YouTube channel I found hearing various tips from the master himself very useful. Narration is harder than it sounds and Brandon is no doubt the best in the biz.

Anonymous

This was thoroughly interesting. Thanks for the peek behind the curtain Brandon!

Anonymous

amazing insight :)

I feel like the patreon post page doesnt get much love, and i also feel like 10$ patreons dont get much more then 5$ and less then 20$ patreons, like were the middle child, maybe add another incentive for 10$ patreons just an idea not a complaint, because i heart you guys either way, but as a 10$ patreon i feel like the middle child, love and respect jones!

Brandon, you should do a Cup of Jones every 1 or 2 months be a public one and say that all the episodes of the show are available just for subs. Raise awareness of the exclusive perks of being a sub!

Thank you for letting us in again to see how you all work things. You are inspiring me to finish things that I start. You work at it until it is the best it can be for you that is great. Take care.
