Salutations! Whenever I get to share a Frame Trap I'm excited, but this week I'm ESPECIALLY PUMPED. We spend a great deal of time talking about incredible things, including Persona 5, Final Fantasy XV, Overwatch, Ni-Oh, and Nintendo.

To me, this episode is exactly what I wanted Frame Trap to be. It's a bunch of really intelligent and passionate panelists talking about videogames without any sort of expectations in place. With that being said, I still have a ways to go as a host. There are topics I meant to talk about that got ignored (sorry, Battlefield 1) and I still have many annoying habits (bouncing leg, talking with hands too much, "um", "yeah", and "like"). Forgive me. I promise I'll get better down the line.

The episode should be on iTunes within the next 12 hours.

The biweekly nature of Frame Trap has resulted in a "omg totally forgot this was coming, this is awesome, such a nice surprise" moment, twice for me.

Anonymous

Agonizing wait between episodes but sooooooooo good as usual. Love this podcast.

Anonymous

Just started watching but sounds and looks great. Good stuff.

Anonymous

Dude yes! So glad we get 2 podcasts (3 if you count Brandon Plays Pokemon). The reason I cling to Easy Allies are definitely the podcasts. So good to just kick back and listen to you guys talk about games and the industry as a whole.

Anonymous

I get ridiculously excited for Frame Trap. Watching now and super excited to get everyones hotake on Persona 5.

Anonymous

Ben can you make this available on Google Play podcast?

Anonymous

Ben I've been so impressed with the amount of initiative you've taken since Easy Allies started. This podcast is a definite highlight of EZA and it's been really nice to see you acknowledge your desire to improve as a host. Keep up the good work!

Anonymous

Hey guys, please make a "Looks better than Witcher shirt"!

Regarding the “iTunes delay,” you should read this post on Giant Bomb: http://www.giantbomb.com/forums/bombcast-32/podcast-waiting-for-it-to-show-up-on-itunes-457178/. The short version is that as long as listeners subscribe to the podcast, they'll get the new episode as soon as it’s posted, regardless of whether it’s visible on iTunes.

Love the "behind the scenes" extra!

I really wish I liked Nioh more. Maybe I approached the demo with the wrong mindset, but I just didn't enjoy it. Not sure why.

Anonymous

What a great episode, thanks guys! This helps alleviating the wait for P5.

Anonymous

Love that it ends on Ben saying "I make a lot of bad decisions in my life" :P

Anonymous

I love the podcasts from these guys. I like how they like to talk about the whole industry. Also being a Nintendo fan myself I really relate with the opinions told by Huber, Ben and Blood. It's a frustrating but Nintendo really is in a period of hibernation. Since they'll only be really damned by whatever next step they make or they'll not. It's a bit frustrating just having to having to have the mindset of not paying them attention in upcoming months.

Completely agree with huber SUBS B4 DUBS. I reluctantly played persona 4 arena ultimax because of the lack of jap dub. I really don't understand why they dont include the original jap dub. I doubt it would take up much more space in that massive blu-ray. Heck make it DLC, id galdly d/l it, id go as far as pay for it. It would suck but id still get it. The experience is incomplete for me otherwise. Atlus is quite literally leaving money on the table. I cant imagine in any form, having the jap dub available to a western audiemce being difficult to accomplish.

Anonymous

As for the sucess of P5. I'm sorry FFXV. P5 > FFXV. I havent played any of the FFXV demos but i'm being caustiously optimistc about FFVX. The last satisfyingly great game i played from Square Enix was The World Ends With You, still impatiently waiting for a sequel. If Square were to announce any game i would be legitimately hyped for it would a sequel to that game or chrono trigger lol. Square has lost my trust in their brand/quality/goodwill. Atlus is the new Square to me when it comes to goodwill. I'm can confidently purchase almost any atlus game without fear while i worry whether not the square game ive purchased is worthwhile. I agree with bloodworth. Atlus has turned making niche games profitable into an art. I'm pretty sure their goal is making money from their core target audience and anything extra is a bonus. I am curious what the cost difference is bettween the making of P5 vs FFXV.

Anonymous

Huber should just be a regular at this point. It's meant to be.

Anonymous

NiOh was something that I was very interested in when I saw it TGS last year, and the demo completely sold me on it. The only big issue I had was the same that you guys mentioned - the amount of trash loot and how it's handled. I also had no idea that this game was originally announced ten years ago, just like FFXV!

Anonymous

Correction: Mercy is Swiss, not German. I think the name "Mercy" is supposed to a nod to how people from the German-speaking parts of Switzerland say "merci" when thanking someone.

Anonymous

Pulled a Kyle Bosman and put this on while I knocked out a run of Super Expert Super Mario Maker. I don't usually play games while I listen to podcasts or vica versa, but the laid back game discussion helped balance out how tense Super Expert levels can be. Finished with about thirty more lives than usual and unlocked Mallo from Pushmo costume. Would recommend.

Anonymous

Absolutely frickin great episode guys.

Anonymous

I'm actually very sad that they showed all characters of your group. It was so great for me to speculate who else could join me whan I was first playing P3 and P4. And discovering them was the best. Oh well getting to know them will still be very fun so I'm not that salty.

PLEASE do "Bloodworth Plays Persona 4 Golden"!

10/10 episode

Anonymous

Wow Ian that is dedication , I have been to LA a few times and the traffic is insane. Lol . This was a fun show. Thank you all.

Anonymous

The Persona 5 trailer (I think the 3rd one specifically) made me buy a PSTV to play 4: Golden. One trailer has never made me put so much stock in a franchise (or subseries) I'd never played before. I have played some SMT so I had some frame of reference going into P4, but man, Persona is engaging - in a different way to the main series. Less stress, more character/story. More entertaining too, but still has a lot of the intense boss battling. Ben, are you hyped for SMT IV: Final/Apocalypse? That game has an awesome trailer. Shorter and more intense than Persona 5.

Anonymous

Blood Plays Persona 4!!!

Anonymous

I believe in Persona 5, and will get it as will almost everyone else who's subscribed to this site. But (depending on Atlus's expectations) a million may not be enough.

Anonymous

I totally agree with Huber's dub rant. I know it's not popular opinion, but I want any media I partake in to be it's originally intended style and format. Give me subs over dubs literally every single time. Art deserves preserving the creator's integrity, only of course when it's possible.

Christoph Zürcher

Thanks a lot for the podcast, it made agonizing over late game puzzles in Stephen's Sausage Roll much more bearable ;).

Anonymous

Can't you guys buy bigger cards ?

Anonymous

Guy's; i love this show, i reeeeeealy do; but you need a better "set" or move the camera or something; i know it"s Ben appartement; but Ben has a couche or something right ?

Anonymous

Whoa, bonus bit with Don!

Anonymous

Huber.... learn Japanese man; but your right; my Girlfriend and her parents; they bought me one of the best gifts EVER; The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki........ in German ='( (send it back; got a gift card instead)

Anonymous

Amazing episode guys! I think some of you guys are crazy for being so in love with Overwatch and then scoffing at the idea of plants vs zombies 2- aren't these both very similar hero shooters with fun characters and good balance?

Anonymous

I think that Persona has proven a pretty damn good track record of putting out fantastic dubs though. I prefer a sub to a bad dub but I will always take a good dub over a sub. Jut my opinion though. As for why they don't include both dubs it's probably more to do with the space on the disc. There is a lot of dialogue in a Persona game and I assume that this one has more spoken dialogue than any previous games. And may I point out as someone who works with media on a daily basis that with HD graphics a Blu-Ray is no longer considered massive. I guarantee the next generation will move away from disks they read too slowly and they don't hold enough data. Period. But who knows the DLC thing might work but I wouldn't count on it. We all know this game is going to be super incredible so not buying it just because of no japanese dub would be a shame.

Anonymous

Loved it up until the end. Huber!!!! Come on man. Ian is right. Don't be a pureist. Be cool bro. Be cool.

erni

Great show Ben! It wa sso interesting that I actually had to start watching it rather than just having it run in the background while I am playing something^^ I have to agree with Huber, there should always be the option of having the original VO. Though I would still play P5 anyway, hell this will be finally the time when I will have to buy a console again, even though I can't afford it and do not even have a TV for it^^ Funny enough with Atlus and Persona all the wait never lowered my expectations or hype for P5, it just feels like they know how to do their thing and respectful patience until they believe its ready is the best way to handle it. Can't wait though aaaaaaaaaaarg ^^

Anonymous

Great show! I loved the Nioh talk, I was totally bummed when the Alpha time expired. I can't wait till I get to play it again.

Anonymous

Ian, I agree with a lot of what you say, but I'm with Huber on P5 and FFVX language options, gotta say I'm kinda shocked Ben wasn't on Huber's side either:( Aside from that disappointment, fantastic episode overall and I think Hotake is the segment I look forwards too the most now, lol! PS: You should make 40k stretch goal so you can get SD cards to break the 2hr barrier eventually;)

Anonymous

Wow hay The Don is here to, nice to see you. Thank you guys it was a fun show. Video games are amazing, so much talent.

Anonymous

But...but it didn't end with a hottake!

Anonymous

If you don't mind me asking, what's your recording setup and what lapel mics do you use? I've used a slew of different lapel mics over the years and always had poor quality recordings. Just looking for some insight as I'd love to use lapel mics for some things over a normal mic and pop filter setup.

Anonymous

Great episode indeed the best so far Ben😉 also that extra ending was great. The Persona segment could be a bit longer though. Thanks guys

Anonymous

Where's the review for uncharted 4?

Anonymous

"I make a lot of bad decisions in my life" hahaha what an ending! Great stuff

Anonymous

Hey Ben! Tech question: What camera do you use for Frame Trap? Video quality isn't very good, IMHO, even on 1080p. Everything looks blurry and slightly out of focus. Any chance for an upgrade? :)

Anonymous

I am with Huber, I have to have the original VO. If I play a Jrpg and it doesn't have JP VO I am probably going to have a hard time getting into it.

Anonymous

I think it just needs to be white balanced. Or get better lighting rigs

Anonymous

Can't tell you how much I disagree with Huber on the whole Japanese VO front. Reading what someone means and hearing a bunch of sounds you don't understand pales in comparison to hearing and understanding what someone is saying. The former lacks the immediacy and important personal element of the latter. I understand defaulting to Japanese VO in anime because a breathtaking amount of English dubs are terrible and lessen the impact of those characters, but that almost certainly won't be the case with Persona 5, if previous Persona games are anything to go by. And as for the whole "playing as intended" argument, the actual intended way to play is in a language that you understand. The people who work so hard on Persona localisation do so because playing with a good dub in a language you understand is better than playing in the original if you don't understand it. Even if Persona 5 were to ship with dual audio, there's no way in hell I'd play it in Japanese. Final Fantasy XV, on the other hand, might actually require the Japanese VO to make the game tolerable.

Anonymous

Don't worry about being a "better host." People just want to see and hear you, Ben, umms, ahs and all

Stephen Smith

I agree entirely. I'd also like to add that I find Japanese voice acting to be the most hammy, over the top schlock there is, but that might just be my personal opinion. So much damned screaming and completely fake voices.

Anonymous

More honest bits!

Anonymous

I loved the Nintendo discussion, and I can't wait for the next episode! Stay trapped in that frame.

Anonymous

Huber, I respect your conviction on the authenticity for Japanese audio. I am expecting JP audio from Persona 5 and FFXV too. Tabata did say that JP audio won't be in the physical disc for FFXV, but he never said it won't be in the game at all in any shape or form.

Anonymous

I would like to point out that at 28:25 Ben says doo doo.

Anonymous

Best out of context phrase of the show: "it's the constant feeling of being fucked!"

Anonymous

This will be my first persona, so I am excited.

Anonymous

Great episode!

Anonymous

I love Ben's enthusiasm and hope for Persona. I love RPG's, but not a big player of JRPG's. Still, I will definitely buy Persona 5... And Ben's a lot to blame for it!

Anonymous

Bonus bits, Huber, you are SO RIGHT! I'm Portuguese, so 95% of media I consume is not in my native language, subtitles are the only way to go! Dubbing can be good, but it's not the original content, it's like watching Aladdin and dubbing Robin Williams as the genie! It's not the same, maybe the guy dubbing is great, but it's not the same work, it's not the same experience. it's a different experience that can be also a positive one, but it's not the same! Huber, you are SO right!

Anonymous

Amazing show Allies! I love Ben's passion for Persona and Rpgs in general. Also "Hotake" is becoming my favourite segment of any show: I simply love when well-informed people discuss about a single topic with such genuine interest. Keep up the good work, love from Italy! Ps Ben, thanks to your stream I'm really looking forward to Valkyria Chronicles Remastered. Sadly Fire Emblem Fates will be out just a couple days after its launch, so Valkyria will have to wait. Hope you will stream the game again soon!

Anonymous

I've always wanted to get into Persona games. As I get older and have less time my backlog is embarrassing. After hearing this and getting into the trailers looks like I'm going to have to make some time.

Anonymous

Best episode so far, I love the way you guys take care of the games, you love and care. Congratulation for the panel!! Just my eardrums did not survived until the end of the episode..

Anonymous

Banner Saga is one of my favorite games! I can't believe you haven't played it yet Ben, you should definitely start with the first one... its such a rewarding game in that you feel the impact of every decision you make

Anonymous

So I don't know how much you look at comments on here, especially since the next episode isn't for another week. I am going to say that the P5 trailers may be some of the best trailers I have ever seen and have actually got me more excited than FFXV at the moment (not overall). So much so that I magically found a way to play P4 finally and am enjoying it immensely. I tried P3 a few times and I feel like the pacing and motive are a bit off. You kind of feel like a spectator for the first 10 hours and I could not get invested. P4 fires on all cylinders right at the beginning, and I have high hopes for P5. Also Ben, I have a theory: Chie is everyone's waifu or they are lying.

Anonymous

I agree with Ben. Best episode yet. I keep meaning to only listen for a short bit but end up sticking through the whole 2 hrs because this is exactly what I hoped EZA would be: intelligent opinions on games from a bunch of enthusiastic people.

Anonymous

Ben! You're doing great. Stop apologizing so much! I really enjoy your hosting and I think you're being too critical of yourself.

FYI guys: Final Fantasy XV absolutely has in both of the demos released so far, had options for both English and Japanese audio in full. AND Tabata has confirmed that these audio options will be available in the full game as well. See here: http://www.novacrystallis.com/2015/08/gc-2015-final-fantasy-xv-will-ship-with-englishjapanese-voices-only-more-text-translations-planned/ Where Tabata initially indicated that they would shoot for having English and Japanese audio for the game in every region, with text options for other languages such as French and German. More recently, they have announced full audio for these other languages as well, still including the option in each respective region to switch between that region's language (such as French or German), English, or Japanese at any time. You can read about that here: http://www.novacrystallis.com/2016/03/24211/ Personally, as someone who consumes a lot of Japanese media, I'm often torn on whether or not to experience any piece of media in Japanese or English, especially since I understand Japanese quite well, having lived in Japan for several years before, and as such can often pick up nuances in the original writing that might otherwise be missed. Ultimately, I've decided for myself already that I'll play FFXV in English. There are two main reasons for this: One is simply that I've played every Final Fantasy up until now in English, and it would be maintaining tradition. It's not a very strong reason, but it is one that I feel, as I want to compare my experience with FFXV to previous entries in the series. The second is that, even in games that I have heard both the Japanese and English audio before and can recognize that overall the original Japanese is superior in quality, there are so often little moments in the English version that impact me heavily, moments that aren't really in the Japanese. The most memorable is in FFX, when Tidus and Yuna are together alone in the pond, talking about how great it would be for Yuna to quit her journey and have fun in Zanarkand instead, but ultimately she says in despair, "I can't. I can't go." I've heard that in both Japanese and English and I truly feel that the English is more powerful, comparing them directly. It seems to convey the emotion that Yuna is feeling at that moment so much more, even though there were so many other problems with the English voice acting for that character. I am so confident that moments like that will be in FFXV, and it's those moments that I really play games for. They're what makes me keep going back time and time again.
