FYI - Starfox guard only comes with day one editions in the EU not with any purchase

Wow that was a great detailed review didnt think it will get such a high score :)

Anonymous

Is the demand high? Because then it'll be in any purchase. :p

Love the review but please reconsider the rating descriptions and nail it down once and for all. The gap between 3 stars (= decent, what happened to recommended?) and 4 stars (= excellent) seems ENORMOUS in terms of quality while between excellent and 5 stars (= masterful) it's kind of wishy-washy, at least in my opinion. Otherwise great work and cool to see Damiani review games again. 7.8, must buy.

Wow, nice score. I like that Miyamoto is at least trying new things. Kyle keeps bagging him, but hopefully SFZ and SFG show him that Miyamoto still has game design chops.

I hate everything about this game. Gimmick controls, redoing the same story, graphics lowered for the 2 screens. really hope there is a starfox on the NX and I hope it's more focused on fun instead of "lets make this work with the gamepad somehow". Ball dropped, I was down day one until it became apparent this was made for the game pad not the people.

Anonymous

Very well and detailedly written. Best review so far! =)

Anonymous

Sorry, but this is the first time I have to criticize you guys. How can this game with flaws like inferior graphics and problematic controls get a higher score that the surprisingly well crafted Ratchet and Clank? As a commenter before said: one part of the problem is the score system that cannot differentiate enough in the high quality region.

Anonymous

Keep it up guys, another fantastic piece of EZA content!

Anonymous

I don't own a Wii U, so I have no interest in buying this. However, I have to say this was an excellent review! Great job Damiani, keep 'em coming!

Anonymous

Every game so far has reviewed at a 4, the one that didn't sounded like it should have been given a 4. I think this shows the real problem with such a restricted score system. The idea is great for something like movies but for whatever reason almost every game reviews in the 70-90 region and a small scale doesn't provide enough distinction. The clear and wide distinction between a 70 and a 90 game is why I liked GT's old system, personal opinion of course.

Anonymous

And to clarify I love the review, editing and general tone of the review. Just not he score system!

Anonymous

I don't mind the star system but I have to say I thought we were heading for a 3-3.5 on that one. Still that's just the cherry on top of a very good Sunday! Thanks guys so glad your back!

Anonymous

I'll be going to pick this up in the morning. This review just got me more hyped. Also glad to see Mr. Damiani back in the review game. You've been missed!!!

Anonymous

But how many barrel rolls out of 100 is it?

Anonymous

I never played a Starfox game, although I've obviously heard a lot about it. However, I can't shake the feeling that this is (correction: "should be") a 10-20 USD mobile game. Anybody else feel that way?

Anonymous

I honestly don't even pay attention to the score, I listen to what they have to say about the game and determine if it sounds like something I would enjoy.

Anonymous

I agree, but technically it's cheaper (49,99$) if you buy it digital, because it does not come with the bonus tower defense game. Wii U games are usually 59,99$. It's still more than 10-20 range that you put though. Note: Nintendo lately seems to split their customer. Retail vs. Digital. Retail gets bonus content (artwork book, amiibo, soundtrack, etc.) while Digital gets rebate (15% off to 30% off) with my Nintendo new program when they purchase some of their games digitally or play with them.

Anonymous

The score at the end confused me. Sounded like a 2.5-3. Nice review =)

Anonymous

how did it sound like a 2.5-3 while the review was pretty much glowingly positive the whole way through?

Anonymous

"Inferior graphics" and "problematic controls" are your own take on the game. From the review, Damiani seemed to find the graphics perfectly serviceable and the controls superior once he got used to them. 'Surprisingly well crafted' is also your personal take on Ratchet and Clank. I really think the problem is not the scoring system but yourself. If you think the scores are wrong, fine. That's your taste. This is theirs. It's their subjective review. Obviously you have your mind made up already about what score these games should be. Why does it matter if someone else feels differently?

Anonymous

I hope so too. But I'll give this a chance since we might be waiting longer for anything. Hopefully not as long.

Anonymous

Anyone able to confirm the amount of levels in the game? Are there more or less stages than in SF64? Haven't seen or heard any mention of it from any review.

Anonymous

Reviews by Mr. Damiani is always a pleasure.

Anonymous

Happy to see you guys doing reviews again :) Will there be one for bravely second? Or is that one going to get a pass?

Anonymous

This game, along with a few others, really make me wish I had a Wii U. I am not going to get one now however, since Nintendo has basically ditched the system. Sure hope the NX has backwards compatibility.

Anonymous

I really think it has to. Since so few people own a Wii U, it basically starts with a sizeable line-up of great games :P

Anonymous

I really dislike the star system. It's so rigid and limiting.

Anonymous

Just got this game today. I have to say the controls are really a challenge and even though I haven't mastered them yet I have had some golden moments that wouldn't have been possible without them. I feel like once you fully master the controls, playing through these levels will be a complete joy.

I hate to be the guy fixating on hours of game-play, but I even felt a bit burned by the length (or lack thereof) of the N64 game. It's pretty hard to make a 10 year old feel burned by an awesome new game back in those days. It's REALLY hard for me to justify dropping 50-60 dollars on an experience that can be burned through in one or two sittings. Especially when I can't lie to myself and pretend to be "getting better for the multi-player". Imagine a Mario game with just 10 (albeit much bigger) stages. Bad analogy, but still, when I re-purchased the 3DS "remake" I was pretty shocked by how much I regretted the purchase within about an hour. The fact that this game is unabashedly a retread of the N64 game doesn't go a long way to bolstering my confidence.. That said, if the Wii U was the only console I owned, I'd buy this in a heartbeat. Does look fun!

Anonymous

Soooo 7.5?? 7.8???

Anonymous

It looks gorgeous and I'm sure if fans complain enough, they'll release a 4-player battle mode as DLC (likely free). Maybe they could even patch in a secondary control scheme.

Anonymous

The N64 version was about 20 minutes each playthrough so this one is significantly longer actually.

Anonymous

Love the review, but realizing ill never get over my disappointment in the star rating system. A perfect game is a 10, we all know this cause we have 10 fingers! There are simply not enough points to differentiate 1 game from another in this start system. Almost every review is going to land between a 3 and 5 star rating. Mind boggled how all of you came to be satisfied in taking the fine tuning out of your opinion after hard work on a review.

Anonymous

This kind of is a 10 point system, with the half stars. They were using a 100 point system, and I'm fine with them moving away from that. Buttt, kinda sad they can't give out 7.8s anymore. :_:

Anonymous

Yes i know

Anonymous

You think huber plays an awesome game, and goes over to the boys shouting "this game is a 5!" I doubt

Anonymous

I give you a 2 out of 5.

Anonymous

THERE IS NOTHNG WRONG WITH THE STAR SYSTEM. The whole point is that specific ratings are outdated and too bias to be useful, so they give a more generalized rating as a vague range of quality so you will make your decision based off of the review itself, not the score.

Anonymous

Vague. You hit the nail on the head there, that's the keyword here. The star rating lacks accuracy, but they know that, and they're fine with that. Games that previously scored in the 90 - 100 range now all get the same rating. To say a game that scores 90 and a game that scores 98-100 are of the same quality is absurd; however Easy Allies have never claimed otherwise, they're just not interested in making the distinction anymore, and that's fine. I miss the old system but I will support them regardless with new system; their fantastic writing and smart editing are still here in abundance and I wish them nothing but success. Great review Damiani, the time and effort you put into it is clear throughout. Keep up the good work!

Anonymous

I would rate it around 3\5. Just because it should have more content. There's also some performance issues with the second screen. But I have to say this, when you get used to the controls and you get good the game surpassed my expectations. Funny how a game I was so skeptical about has turned into one of the most interesting releases, regardless of its flaws.

Anonymous

Also, such a tragic story that of the Wii U. When I take a look at my game collection for the 3 current systems, the Wii U completely obliterates the competition... Yet for some reason that's not enough.

Anonymous

Another amazing review, even better than Gt reviews

Anonymous

I definitely own more games on Wii U than PS4, for sure. What always kills me is people complaining about 3rd party support. Like, every game I own on the Wii U was published by Nintendo, and a lot of them are straight GOAT contestants if you ask me. Poor Wii U :'(
