Hi Allies--

Tonight I'd like to introduce you to a low-key new series we're producing called Brandon Plays Pokémon, in which I interview our hero Brandon Jones as he embarks on his first-ever Pokémon adventure. This was not part of any Patreon stretch goal, just something Brandon and I figured we could put together late Tuesday nights, after the group streams and meetings and podcasts. Basically we shot this just because it's something we've wanted to do.

So please let us know what you think of this! Or even, this kind of thing! We'll definitely keep making Brandon Plays Pokémon every week until Jones is a Pokémon Master, but your feedback will as always inform what kind of videos we make going forward.

Love & Respect,

(& Pokémon,)

Kyle

Brandon Plays Pokémon - Part 1

It's Brandon's first-ever Pokémon adventure and Kyle can't wait to document each little moment. Can this primitive 20-year-old game capture the imagination of a fully-formed adult who has ignored the franchise entirely until this moment? Loved it x

Watched this on YouTube earlier today. Just the best. Cannot wait for next weeks episode! This is exactly the kind of content I love :) Keep up the excellent work everyone!

Anonymous

Love to see Kyle talking about pokemon)

Anonymous

I love this sort of thing. Full support from me.

Anonymous

Love the nicknames haha

Tim Albers

What Version of Pokemon are you playing? didn't find it in the video

Ian Alexander

He said at the start he is playing "Pokemon Red for the Easy Allies Red" and he is holding the 3DS to look at it. It's the 3DS e-shop re-release of Pokemon Red.

Ian Alexander

Love this video so much! Reminds me of myself asking my girlfriend about every little detail of her Pokemon experience (although she seems to always forget those things.)

Anonymous

This is great and actually just want I wanted from Brandon's Red Dead play through as well! I also love that this is just something "we wanted to do", and you guys can make time for it. This is what made what has become Easy Allies great!

Anonymous

This is perfect! Please continue as I really appreciate it!

Anonymous

Absolutely fantastic! I remember when you interviewed Brandon on I think FB one time, you talked about doing this show...and now here it is. I love the sense of continuity we have gotten from EZA. Keep it up guys!

Anonymous

I halted my progress so I can play along with Brandon. Its fun going back through this game and even better hearing someone with fresh eyes go through it.

Andrew Chalmers

I've been playing Pokemon since the very beginning, and I find this so fascinating to listen to. Looking forward to future videos!

Anonymous

As someone who has never really played Pokemon, seeing another novice get into and be "interviewed" by a veteran of the series is a lot of fun! Questions were on point, made me more interested in the series and I want to hear more about how Brandon does. Great little show!

Anonymous

great show guys! :) and btw: i would never leave that garage. the comfy vibe is perfect for your shows. way better than a clean studio in my opinion. feels like we're all hanging out together! ;) cheers, love & respect! :)

Eric Plunk

Love it. Continue.

I'm in the same seat as Brandon right now. Just bought a 3ds and I'm playing my very first Pokemon. I went with Yellow cause I do like the idea of having pikachu as a constant companion on my journey but I'm afraid that he's going to end up loathing me by the end. Keep up the good work guys. Still can't properly express how happy I am to have you guys back making content again.

Anonymous

Hahahaha. This is awesome, nostalgia town. You guys should make this a new running segment where you guys get the other one to play games that shaped your childhood.. and call it "Nostalgia Town"!!! This was amazing to watch, thanks for sharing :) 5 star content; as always ;)

Anonymous

I absolutely love this series already. I've only played Pokemon Red, so I'm glad you chose to play this one :)

Anonymous

I love this vid, but Brandon really highlighted in his "dreams" exactly what Pokemon is missing - story, level design, confusing rules of the types of Pokemon

Anonymous

Great show, and great episode. Please don't make them shorter. Is there are possibility to show gameplay? And can you explain differences between Red,Blue, Sapphire, Ruby, Black, White and others Pokemon games?

Anonymous

This was great. So nostalgic for me. Reminds me why I loved pokemon so much as a kid. May have to replay it now. Please don't make future episode any smaller I really enjoy the detail.

Anonymous

This was amazing to see and I'm glad Jones is getting into it, please keep them around 20 minutes or longer for sure.

Anonymous

Just played was one of my favourite things on GT, I'd love more of these kind of casual chats about something someone is playing.

Anonymous

I'm sorry Kyle, but nostalgia is blinding you, the second generation is the best and I've pinned down why: - Night and day cycle, with different pokemon appearing at night and the cute lights inside the houses. - Psychic is not OP anymore, with the introduction of dark type and ghosts that are not also venom type (weak against psychic) - Team rocket is back with a cooler plan. - Also no saving the world (which really is stupid from third generation on), but a much more intricate lore with the two burned towers and the flareon, vaporeon and jolteon turning into entei, suicune and raikou, and also the unown lore, instead of just mewtwo's story and then three birds that are just there for no reason. - You can choose to be a female character. - Pokemon daycare and pokemon eggs - Pokemon gender and exp bar in combat - Red gyarados - Actual puzzles in caves through moving rocks - Berrys, and pokemon can now carry objects. - You can go back to Kanto, fight a three year older version of the Kanto gym leaders, get a first generation starter as well and, at the end, fight the stronger npc of pokemon history, RED. - Day specific events, like the bug catching contest. - Houses have a way more japanese vibe to them, which i find to be pretty cool. - You help two different proffesors in their research, Elm with his research on eggs and Oak with the pokedex. So Kyle, just condemning this games because your mother calls you is foolish, you are a ten year old after all, there's nothing bad in a little reminder that there is someone who cares about you and you are not completely alone in this world. Red was the first pokemon I played and the one that gives me the most chills, but I'm not blinded by nostalgia, second generation is just better. Hope you read this and if you do please answer with your thoughts. Love & Respect.

Lol, Johnny is level 100 before you reach the league :') Great show btw :)

Anonymous

I loved it, and it was really cool seeing this pop up out of seemingly nowhere - different kinds of videos or shows every now and then are a nice change of pace, spice things up a little bit.

Anonymous

awesome! request: footage of brandon playing during the chat

Anonymous

Also, shiny pokemon and the little dance they do when going into fight in crystal are just too cool

Anonymous

This was sooo good (except you got your nidorans mixed up with the graphics >:D ). I'll always love the second generation the best, but red/blue was definitely the right place to start. Pokemon is so big about incremental changes, starting from the foundation is key to really feeling it.

Anonymous

Seriously my favourite series so far. If Brandon plays more Pokemon after Red my life will be complete.

Brandon K Gann

Hey Misters Bosman and Jones. This is a great idea for a series. I recently just played through Red Version on a free emulator over the web and listening to how Mr. Jones plays Pokemon is fascinating. By brute forcing with his Johnny and not having a balanced team is thoroughly entertaining. Keep up the great work and good luck to you Mr. Jones.

Anonymous

I'm with ya' Jones, I loved that my Bulbasaur's growl got progressively deeper and more aggressive as it evolved. Did you know that if your pokemon has the "Growl" move, it uses that sound effect? Pretty cool.

Robert I.

Never stop making these. It's a dream I've never had: Brandon Jones on his quest to become a Pokemon Master with Kyle Bosman as his mentor. This was the dream team I never knew I needed.

Anonymous

This is the best. I really love this idea!

Anonymous

This is my new favourite series! I love Kyle's knowing questions to Brandon and the joy of Brandon experiencing Pokemon for the first time with Kyle sort of guiding him through it! One question though, is there a rule in place for Brandon not being allowed to look up info online? (ie. stat, move and when Pokemon evolve also Type Charts)

Anonymous

Love this series, so fun and interesting to watch Brandon play something I first played nearly 20 years ago. Also, regarding the name Johnny for Charmander - Ghostrider's name was also Johnny Blaze. I guess Marvel really liked that name.

Anonymous

Great! I started playing Pókemon Yellow myself, for the first time ever, a few weeks ago. It's cool to have this show close to my own journey. Loving it, so far.

Love this kind of series where a huge fan of a game slowly introduces it to a new player and share how they feel about it. Would love to see other games being covered like this after pokemon.

Anonymous

I love the idea of hearing the first Pokémon Playthrough from a newcomer perspective. This is really something special. Love & Respect!

Anonymous

Love this!

Anonymous

Love it! Keep it thirty minutes if you can!

David Rodríguez Madriñán

This may be my favorite Easy Allies video so far, and I loved the other ones. Definitely keep the 30 minutes if possible. Kyle looks SO excited in this x)

Monika

This is my most favorite type of show! I love when you just get to sit together and talk about video games. Best in the biz! (also Sophie absolutely stole the show, I had to watch it again because I wasn't paying attention :) please say hi and pet her for me!)

Anonymous

Also, Pokemon may be uniquely suited to this format, but if you can think of other good series to do this with (that Jones or any Ally in particular are inexperienced with), this would be a cool foil to retrospectives long term. Obviously not saying you explicitly pair them with the same series as that'd be a ton of work, but it's just cool to look at games in general from both sides like that. Retros give you an overview of the full experience with maybe things we missed or didn't know, this gives you a beginners view that we maybe take for granted. To different angles that hit similar nostalgia notes.

Anonymous

Great show really enjoyed watching and is making me really want to go back and play again myself. A couple of interesting points: beating Brock with a just a level level 15 Pikachu is super-satisfying, I as someone who has just spent a month or two filling the computers os that I have at least one of all 720 pokemon in a pc box I agree with Jones: Go back and get that Weedle. Finally while most of the weakness and strengths seem to be based on logical like grass and water, some are more based on common misconceptions i.e. water is weak again electricity when water is an insulator not a conductor, while fire is a conductor so fire should be weak against electric! Can't wait for the next episode!

Anonymous

I really enjoyed this. It's fascinating to see the interaction between a veteran and a newcomer.

Anonymous

My first Pokemon game was Yellow. I love it. Haven't been able to enjoy a Pokemon game since then. I may play Red or Blue thanks to you guys.

Anonymous

Yeah this is a great idea for a series. Find more games among staff with similar situations and make it a whole series!

Anonymous

I haven't played a Pokemon game, but this is exactly the kind of content I want to see from you guys. Keep up the good work!

Anonymous

LOVE IT. This series needs to continue with more games after this and a bend toward having EZA's play games they just never played or never had time to really get into or maybe even DID love at one point but for whatever reason didn't get a chance to finish. Great work.

Sophie v. Portillo the greatest gladiator match in the history of video games

Anonymous

I really love this, because it's both personal and relevant to recent events. It's great to hear a newcomer's insight into the Pokemon games! Reminds me of when my boyfriend started with Pokemon Y a couple years ago. There's things newbies take notice of that people who've been playing since the early gens might miss.

Anonymous

This is so awesome!!! Please never stop

Anonymous

This episode was awesome! Brandon, your first play through is exactly how mine went! Even though I used to watch the cartoon back in those days, I chose Charmander as well and went up against water types and rock types with him, and totally crushed them because I farmed the hell out of Charmander. Even towards the end of the game, Charizard was always my first pick against any and all types of Pokemon, if not to crush them, then at least severely handicap them. Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying this classic. I never picked up a Pokemon game since Pokemon Yellow (after Red & Blue) due to simply outgrowing the series, but now after watching this episode, I think I might just pick up the 20th Anniversary bundle.

Max Jahner

As a person who has played Pokemon since Blue, and as a person who studied the paper Pokedex I bought with that first game for hours on end, it's really magical to see Brandon not knowing things that feel like such common Pokemon knowledge. Might have to start Blue over and relive the magic!

Anonymous

This was good stuff. Waiting for that first gym leader loss.

Anonymous

This was really fun and interesting to watch and I just bought a 3ds and Pokémon Red. I have played some Pokémon before but never completed any game. So I will embark on this same journey and play by the same rules. This is gonna be so much fun!

Anonymous

This is really interesting. Makes me want to play Pokemon again. And Jones, do not let that Sparky turn into that fat Raichu!

Anonymous

Really like this a lot!

Anonymous

I love this! I never played a Pokemon game either and I'm tempted to play along with Jones. You should consider doing a video game book club series after this where we all play a game together over the course of a month. It could be the same format with only two people but also involve community comments!

Anonymous

This was way more interesting than I thought it would be and look forward to hearing more in the next episode.

Monika

Go for it! I bought one copy of Red for my 3DS right after I watched this show yesterday (and I already have my first badge, Brock was no match for my bulbasaur :D )

Anonymous

Awesome show. It would be great if we could get an update at the beginning and end of party members and levels.

Anonymous

Great show! Keep these discussions at this length or more. Also I hope that now we are doing just played videos again we can have discussion videos about Dark Souls 3...that would be wonderful! L&R

Anonymous

This is my favorite thing you have done on EZA. Getting a Game Boy Color with Pokemon Red for my 10th birthday was the best gift I have ever gotten. I enjoy hearing Brandon's first experience with the game.

Anonymous

I think this is the first new original show on EZA , I really like the idea of someone trying a franchise for the first time. I know you guys are busy but if you can you should do this with other franchises.

Anonymous

Fantastic show idea and execution! Definitely one of my favorite videos to come out of EZA so far.

Anonymous

I love this show idea and can't wait to see next weeks episode. I never played red but I still remember when I was a kid and my dad came home from work and had Pokemon yellow in his lunch box. Easily one of my greatest memories going up so watching this reminds me of getting started and learning all about Pokemon. Keep up the great work guys. L&R

2016-04-21 14:19:45 I love this idea, I've always wanted to hear more from Kyle about his passion for Pokemon and the idea of this conversation is fantastic. I know this is more work, but I'd love to see you cutting to shots of the game as you talk about it.

Already commented on Youtube but also had to come back here. Please keep em coming!

I love this show idea. Wow. Please don't cut it down to 5 or 10 minutes. Go big it's entertaining. This kind of content is why I'm supporting you guys every month. No one else is doing this and if they are its not as genuine. Love and respect.

Earnest series newbie interviewed by attentive series expert is a really interesting format. I think you guys are seriously on to something here.

chocolate_prophet

30 minutes per show sounds just about right. Seeing Jones and Kyle together like this is AWESOME :P

Anonymous

I like shorts, they're easy to wear.

Anonymous

I think this would be a brilliant series in general - you could do a 'rookie stays on' rotation - after Brandon finishes Pokemon, he introduces a classic game to another Ally, who then plays it through, chats to Brandon about it, and then that Ally introduces something to someone else!

EasyAllies

I certainly don't condemn Gold and Silver, but just think Red and Blue are still the best. Eggs and breeding is not a benefit to the overall world in my eyes. It starts this thing where the player has too much power, can breed Pokemon all day, freeing lvl 1 baby Pokémon into the wild simply because they have bad stats. Breeding Pokémon is for Gary Oaks

Anonymous

O no Kyle, you mixed up the male and female nidorans on the bottom of the screen

This made me pledge.
