The PlayStation 5 Showcase had so many updates this week, we spend more time covering those than the actual games. Nintendo shares another round of new Partners on Switch and finally discontinues the 3DS, Facebook premieres the Oculus Quest 2, and August is another record-breaking month for the NPDs.

Appreciate your work through all the craziness this week, guys!

Correction: That claim from Xbox Reddit that there are more next gen console exclusives announced for Xbox SeriesX/S than PS5 is false. Their list includes multiple games that are cross gen (Both the Gunk and the PSO2: Genesis release are coming to Xbox One). Removing those from the list drops the total to 11, and there are 12 PS5 next gen only console exclusives I'm aware of: Destruction All Stars Demon's Souls FFXVI Project Athia Returnal Astrobot Godfall Deathloop Ghostwire Tokyo God of War Ragnarok Gran Turismo 7 Rachet and Clank Incidentally, I do not think the existence of 3 cross gen games from Sony invalidates their belief in generations. They are publishing two next gen only games at launch and Horizon is the only cross-gen game left going forward. That is in stark contrast to Microsoft promising all games would be cross-gen for the first couple years.

Correction: The Splinter Cell HD trilogy was only on PS3; it never came to Xbox 360.

Also, Sony has always supported their previous console when their new console releases. God of War 2 PS2, GT6 for PS3 etc.

Correction: Though not traditional paid remasters, all mainline Splinter Cell games (including both versions of Double Agent) are playable via backwards compatibility on Xbox One. Additionally, they're also all up-resed to 4K on One X with minor graphical and stability improvements, so in a sense they are basically remasters.

Correction: Crusader Kings III was released on September 1st. Any August NPD sales would be preorders.

I could be wrong, but I thought npd typically counts game sales from the ~ 5th or 6th of the month to the 4th or 5th of the next month, i.e August 6th- September 5th. You can see this happen with the March 2020 npds which have re3 remake at 4th (April 3rd release), or the March 2018 npd with dkc tropical freeze at 5th (April 4th release).

Great podcast. Very important: Huber must play Splinter Cell Blacklist. Steam or Xbox One X enhanced backwards compatibility. It's an excellent fusion of traditional Splinter Cell and Conviction. Play it either way. Also has separate co-op missions. I was very surprised to hear he hasn't played it. Hidden gem.

Drove 3 hours from Seattle to Vancouver to purchase a Crystal Original Xbox @ Fable’s launch.

Sidenote: splinter cell games are available on Xbox One through backwards compatibility

clarification : Game prices (digital) in the UK have increased by 20% during this generation! And this next generation increase will now be another 15%! From what I've read the $60 game price, for the last 15 years, has been a purely US thing. The rest of the world have been subsidising that price for over a decade!

Correction: There are two versions of Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 and neither are incomplete. The Xbox, Gamecube, and PC version were developed by EA Seattle and the PS2 version by Black Box. I owned the PS2 version as a kid and after buying it recently I looked into buying the Xbox version after seeing how much better the Burnout games look on there. I was surprised to see how different they were. Race tracks, game modes, car handling and more were different. Even the PS2 graphics looked better. The general consensus from reviewers and the fan base is that the PS2 version is superior. From then on Black Box made every console Need For Speed that generation.

Please do the V-youtubers idea Huber and Ian :D

Thanks for the extra details, but I'm not sure what there is to correct. I didn't say they were incomplete. I said that they handed off development part way through and as a result the two versions ended up being significantly different. --Which seems to be supported by what you're saying here as well. -Bloodworth
