Sony had a wild week, pulling our attention between Spider-man, PS4 controllers, and a fully-stacked August State of Play. Also GDC goes online, xCloud goes offline on iOS, and Nintendo reports more record hardware and software sales.

Already a great podcast that brings the relaxed, goofy vibes I’ve been missing. Jones was relaxed and appropriately hands off, which I loved, and the panel all seemed to be in a good, chill mood. Keep it up Allies!

Just missing Rocksteady

Correction: Zeni is also the currency in Dragon Ball.

SALTY CORRECTION: Playstation exclusives in Destiny and Destiny 2 included more than strikes. It also included armor, exotic weapons and equipment, ships, multiplayer maps, and questlines. Also, with the way D1 and early D2 handled leveling, by the time these items arrived on Xbox and PC, they were outdated to the point of uselessness.

Ben c'mon man, Blood let you ramble for 3 whole minutes about your Elite 2; you don't gotta cut the dude off before you right off him staying he liked a thing. Actin' like you aren't from the Midwest and know better

The anger over the controllers on PS5 is baffling. The industry standard is controllers not carrying over. Even more baffling is Damiati thinking that controllers not carrying over baffling. When it never happens until Xbox one to series X.

For Better or For Worse almost all of our input iteration and Improvement over the years have been done by consoles. For Microsoft to just give up on this for me feels like a net loss for the industry. In the game industry there are always ideas that are outlandish and strange up until the point somebody pulls it off. In general it feels to me that Sony is pushing the boundaries much more so than Microsoft which is what I'm looking for in my choice of Home console.

You have to look at what Microsoft is doing from a birds eye point of view. In my opinion Microsoft is correct in their approach. They have 3 types of controllers to support. Ben already mentioned the elite series of controllers and then you have the regular controllers and lastly you have all those custom design controllers. That’s 3 types of controllers and I think it is very smart to have your controllers all supported moving forward. And that doesn’t mean that Microsoft can’t implement some new feature in the future. I see it that if they do introduce a new feature in a controller they would let public decide if you want to take advantage by getting the new controller or stick with your older controller and not take advantage of the new feature. It all depends on well developers find interesting ways to take advantage and make use of new features Sony PS5 controller offers.

Correction: Despite Damiani's assertion to the contrary, it has not been confirmed that Sony's license for Spider-man games is not exclusive. In fact, the most likely explanation for his inclusion in only the PlayStation is contractual exclusivity. While people will point to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 to "disprove" this possibility, no one knows the terms of Sony's agreement with Marvel. It is very possible it does not apply to portable platforms like the Switch, Nintendo may have paid to sub-license the Spider-man characters, or something about the Ultimate Alliance franchise contract could predate or supersede Sony's exclusivity. All said, the most likely explanation is Sony paid a lot of money for the right to make their exclusive Spider-man game, and the character appearing in every version of Avengers was never in the cards. It was a choice between him being in the PlayStation versions only, or not appearing in the game at all.

Yes, I have a strong preference for the company that asks itself how it can push the medium further when compared to the company that prioritized reducing friction for new business models.

Nice podcast but I just have small piece of feedback. Ben's chair clipping in and out of his virtual background constantly was annoying to look at. Super nitpicky thing, I know, but since working from home may be the norm for a long time, might be worth nipping this in the bud.

Kyiv is spelled that way because it better reflects the Ukrainian pronunciation versus "Kiev" which is more closely associated with Russian pronunciation.

It's kind of a thing with many city names, Like Prague and Praha, etc.

I'm REALLY impressed with the density of news and information in the Jones era. Always so good. Also what a great last word, Blood. Great work, doods.

Also can't use MUA3 as proof because it isn't on a Sony platform. Sony gains nothing fighting/paying to keep a character they don't own out of a game they don't have.

Calling the features of the dual-sense gimmicks and comparing it to the sixaxis shows a complete lack of understanding of the technology. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are evolutions of features we’ve had since the PlayStation 1 days. We use the rumble and triggers on almost every game. And yes I agree it would be nice if Sony allowed developers the option to use both PS4 and DS (which I think they will eventually) 3rd party devs wont make full use of the new technology unless they have to and it isn’t because they’re lazy. Utilizing the features will end up taking a back seat until the last minute and just get shoe horned in or left untapped. That’s game development and Sony knows it, so they want to keep 3rd party devs on it so we gamers get the full experience.
