This is the last week I’ll be working with Kyle Bosman. I recently began to realize that, aside from my building anxiety around how our community will deal with his departure and stay focused on an Easy Allies without him, I’m also just sad my friend is moving away. Today I want to focus on that part of it, because I’m sure a lot of you are having those feelings as well. I hope you enjoy our group stream this week (produced to Kyle’s specifications) and give feedback regarding the future of the podcast as it changes hands.

Hey Mr. Jones! (EDIT: If you read the replies, I was given the heads up WELL before this episode, so please ignore this post. Will post a new question after this episode.) Super fast and easy question for you this week and one that could potentially be moot by the time you read this but: Will there be a Spoiler Mode for Final Fantasy VII: Remake? I can’t get enough of the game, both playing and watching as many spoilercasts and other videos as possible, so not having such a video from EZA leaves me selfishly wanting to hear the Allies’ spoiler filled thoughts in one place. Thanks for taking my question and as always have a wonderful rest of your day! QUESTION: Will there be a Spoiler Mode for Final Fantasy VII: Remake?

Anonymous

Hi Brandon, no question, just a pep talk. I think it’s ok and only natural to have or feel anxiety concerning the circumstances. In Kyle an important and integral part of the Allies is leaving and for the first time (?) EZA has to deal with what feels like a setback. Losing Kyle hurts and thats just the „hey, i like what this guy has to say“ side of things. Losing him as a friend to just has to suck. Big time. The whole current situation sucks, but i‘m sure you‘ll make the best of it and i have to say: i‘m exited to see what the future holds for you guys and us as a community. So keep your head up and don’t worry, if the first podcast won‘t turn out the way you thought. You have time to grow into your new role, so don’t pressure yourself. Cheers, René

Brandon Jones, I have to know.... what is your favorite Pink Martini record?

The Canisters send their regards.

Sorry about the resume question. I had assumed you would answer it in the comments as opposed to the video since it's not really a business question, and I thought maybe you had experience looking at resumes and would be able to give advice from that perspective. I appreciate the response and Amanda's input!

Andrew Chalmers

As an audio listener, I can confirm that the beard has no impact.

Anonymous

Just so you don't have to wait a week for Jones's response, Maximilian Dood said on stream that he'd be joining the Allies for a Remake discussion in the next week.

strawhatninja

Jones, in response to the question last week about why people aren't sharing as many trailers. I know for me personally I don't watch trailers for stuff I really care about, because of how many spoilers there are. I learned this lesson hard way back with Batman vs Superman trailer that revealed Doomsday. I just feel like companies spoil too much anymore, so I personally don't want as many trailers as I used too.

You look really good in a beard Brandon.

Brandon, I think you may need to talk to one of the mods in chat. They're being extremely strict, and banning people for jokes that chat has made for years. I even got timed out for 10 minutes for telling someone "I Agree" with their comment in chat saying the mod is out of control. It feels like this mod has let the power get to their head and during the Bosman Damiani Megaman stream that was just casual chat talking to the streamers it turned into everyone questioning the bad mod "littlekittenbit" for a long time. I've been here since the beginning and don't even know who that person is. But they're ruining the fun we have in chat by making it more PC than a kotaku article. Personally, I'm not even going to participate in chat while this person remains a moderator. It's just not the same recently, it's like you have to walk on eggshells and we can't even joke around with the person streaming anymore and they take it upon themselves to ban even words being said when Twitch has built in ways to censor words you don't like.

Hi Jones. Just a couple of quick questions of the How Do You Do This kind, just for my curiosity and nothing more: 1. If you and another Ally wanted to watch and commentate some pre-recorded game footage remotely, what program(s) would you use to do that? 2. When you have guests on, e.g. Maximilian Dood for FF7R Spoiler Mode, is there any financial compensation involved for the guest or is cross-promotion of their "brand" enough?

Anonymous

With all due respect I think you'll need to provide specific examples of comments that were then moderated, for Brandon to then look at and consider. He might not have the time to go through the twitch vod.

Christopher Peterson

Hey Jonsey, Good luck with this week’s podcast as host!! Now that I’ve buttered you up, how about you add a Final Fantasy VII Remake Spoiler Mode with Brad, Ben and Huber to the schedule, please. Love and Respect, Chris

Dont go bosman :(

Stuart F.

I just want to say this somewhere I know it will be seen by an Ally. I don't regularly watch EZA streams, I'm mostly here for the podcasts and other edited video content, but I tuned into last night's group stream because it was Kyle Bosman's last. And my friend, the reading of "Mr. Icky" is one of the most unique and wonderful experiences I have had in this still-new media landscape of streaming. Like many, I read The Great Gatsby in high school and enjoyed it, but I did not know that F. Scott Fitzgerald had ever written anything so absurd, surreal, and downright hilarious. I know I'm not the only one who maybe rolled their eyes a bit when Kyle insisted on reading a *random* play, and of course the first play was a dud, but "Mr. Icky" turned out to be so unexpectedly perfect for the Allies and genuinely entertaining to listen to. I mean, Fitzgerald's "play" was essentially the 1920s version of one of Kyle's weird, extended bits! Anyway, kudos to you all for taking a bittersweet evening and ending it with me nearly unable to control myself with laughter. PSYCHIC RESEARCH!

Jones you look so distinguished with the beard.

I just wanted to suggest / plead for you guys to be better with your YouTube branding and thumbnails. This is mainly triggered by the FF7 spoiler mode that just went up. You have a special guest Max and it's public but there is no mention of him in the title of the video or the thumbnail. I'm sure the views on the spoiler mode will be good but they probably could have been a lot better. It's as simple as "FF7 spoiler more with Maximillian dood" this takes no extra effort. Even better would be to put his face in the thumbnail so people browsing actually see that. Its these small changes which can really help videos and the channel grow. And after so many years these things shouldn't be missed.

Hello Brandon, Got to ask the hard question, what are the odds of us ever getting a Tootsie emote for twitch?

Anonymous

To fill the hole left by Kyle, how about "The Final Milo"? ^_^

Estaban

Seeing Jones with the beard reminds me of the Star Trek TNG episode where multiple dimensions come together and we see different versions of the enterprise. One of them obviously came from a fairly rough timeline and Riker looks similarly disheveled. This whole thing is fascinating. I wonder how we will look back on this in a few years...

Beard looks awesome though Jones

I was trying to identify my feeling about Kyle's departure and it is how Jones described it - that feeling of a favourite show ending. There is a sense of loss, but some comfort in knowing I can go back and see him again via the likes of Box Peek, Fiasconauts and so much other great stuff he created or helped produce. Nonetheless, it is bittersweet watching Kyle's final contributions to Easy Allies this week and I will miss him.

Brandon, Please look at the audio only post, several of us posted there with major concerns. Very important to address this and fix this issue for the community that loves you since GT.

Hi Jones. Writing this right after watching the final podcast with Kyle. He brought up most of what I wanted you think about going forward in his tips (devil's advocate and thinking of listeners) so I'll just say this: I don't think you should compare yourself to Kyle on the podcast, even as a bit, at least in the beginning. In the month leading up to his departure Kyle often spoke about making a clean break and I've come to really agree with it. In my opinion as a viewer, bringing attention to how you are different from Kyle only makes it harder to move on. Go all in on your own style.

Hey Jones. No offense to the other allies, but I feel like you are lifting too much of the burden (for lack of a better term) of community interaction shows. With the weekly Cup of Jones, the monthly Community Showcase, and now the EZA Podcast (which has a sizable community portion), it just feels like maybe another ally should be doing one of these things. Selfishly, I love Cup of Jones and don't want anything to change, but I think Community Showcase could do okay with another host. Brad, maybe, since he doesn't have a hosting gig right now?

Joseph La Russa

Hi Jones! One critique of your suggested opening line for your opening statement on your first podcast as official host: I don't think you should have "impressions of games we're playing" in there because...well, you don't do that, lol. At least not on the podcast, that's a FrameTrap thing. I like the statement otherwise. Do you intend to add an impressions segment to your version of the podcast? If not, I would remove that portion. L&R!

Jones, I watched for years, never wrote in until now First! Desire index. Yes. Anger everyone. Problem with desire index: It’s hard for audiences to know where things are in the list without a visual. Solution: use the overhead card game camera in the studio and have pins or laminated printed logos that represent the games. When you start the ad read and the camera focuses on you, have the allies in the middle of the table set up the visual logos in order. Just a thought! Second! Ad reads Please keep the ads very well marked in the podcast timestamps. Biggest complaint with kinda funny and Mega64 is they interweave the ad read and don’t clearly label it. Third! Branding. Bloomberg has around 10 podcasts focused on financial markets. There is a podcast for each sector, overall markets, etc. But there is one podcast called “Bloomberg Oddlots” where they talk about something completely out of left field like the intricate details of rare Korean Volatility Swaps. The hosts tie in the seemingly random topic into the broader financial landscape in interesting ways, and listeners have unique talking points that listeners won’t get from other podcasts. (Recommendation for a fast approaching issue: Bloomberg Oddlots - Why the War on Physical Cash is a War on Freedom) Easy Allies is the Bloomberg Oddlots of gaming podcasts. The unique perspectives you bring to the gaming landscape are what drive viewers to you. No other podcast goes in depth on NPDs. No one talks about the game development process and management as intricately as Easy Allies. Keep the deep dive aspect of the podcast. I want Damiani to tell me what the seven EPD groups at nintendo are making. Stay weird. It’s your brand. Fourth! Don’t go corporate. Kinda funny is Corporate. I like them, but I never know if I can trust their hosts to be as impartial as I believe someone covering the gaming industry should be. Jones, if I didn’t know you and heard you praising GTA 6 marketing pre release, I’d tune out thinking you’re corporate. Not a critique, just something to keep in mind. Fifth! Schreier Get him on a podcast, whatever it takes. Ask him the questions he doesn’t get asked. (Biggest screw ups, most proud work, what his process is) Side note: Come up with a creative name for when Schreier drops a story. “The Schreier Wire” is the best I can think of. Sixth! Physical Fitness Jones, your hidden competitive advantage is your knowledge of wellness health and physical fitness. Posture tips or gaming stretches with your trainer and jones would be funny at the end of a podcast. Literally no one is doing that. Teach me proper posture when you sit at the TV for 10 hours. Hell, make it it’s own series. There’s a market for gaming health tips. Seventh! Gaming industry fact checking You mentioned this in the podcast and it is a good idea. Following a hot narrative thread throughout multiple podcasts episodes for something like the ever shifting narrative leading up to the Xbox one, fallout 76 or anthem would’ve been fascinating to see fact checked week by week. “promises made by corporations” quarterly updates could be interesting. Eighth! Phil Spencer Xbox Series X Marketing Post Mortem If I can leverage my patreon support into one request, this is it. There’s no podcast that cares more about the marketing of a gaming console more than Easy Allies. Phil Spencer is likely easier to contact in this moment due to work from home. I know you have your contacts, reach out to Phil with your clip from Easy Update and tell him you want to do a debrief about the marketing once the consoles are launched. Someone has to interview Phil on the step by step decision making that he had to make during the pandemic. If he knows someone wants to interview him about it in the future, he may take better mental notes now. Ninth! Jones, you are going to do great. The moment you signed off a podcast saying Free Hong Kong was the most proud I’ve ever been of you. Tenth! Which of the nine easy allies were Boy Scouts/Eagle Scouts?

I´ve pitched this before but now that the podcast will be going through changes, I decided to give this a one more try. Would it be a good idea to drop a 10 minute “teaser segment” on Friday before releasing the full podcast? It could be a jolly news segment, a passionate rant or anything in between. You would be killing couple birds with one stone. 1. You would be actually promoting your podcast on Youtube and doing it in appealing way. “Modern Warfare 2 Announced and Launched” is much more attractive video title than “ Easy Allies Podcast #208”. These clipped segments could help bring in new people but also benefit your current subscribers. For example, I had no idea the PS5 controller was revealed so I completely missed that entire podcast. 2. Since news these days seem to have a very short shelf life, it would be a good idea to get your commentary on hot topics out there as soon as possible. 3. You could keep your podcast titles as they currently are. 4. These clipped segments would give your channel something it currently hasn’t, a short form gaming news update, if you will. 5. You are currently uploading 6-7 videos between your main podcasts, so this would make your channel a bit more active and more diverse.

Heya Jones, I mean, okay. That's fine. I just thought it would be nice is all. Anyway, if Easy Allies was the impoverished mother of twin boys and gave one up to her wealthy employer, would they really think that that was going to end well for either of them?

Hey Jones, Another month is coming to an end. Kyle leaving really was a surprise. I wish you the best of luck with eza in the coming months and the podcast this week. But, with the month also coming to an end that means another community showcase is coming up. Will this finally be the one with huber? Can I finally release my first of possibly three part fan idea pitch for a batman beyond trilogy? -Best wishes and stay safe, Sean

While watching the podcast and listening to the the up coming changes I had a idea. Why don’t you guys stream the podcast for patreon members and set it to private like Cup of Jones? Was just curious and sorry if this was asked before L&R Jason.

Greetings, Brandon. It's been some time since I wrote for Cup of Jones, a lot of things have happened, but specially Kyle's departure has hit me hard. I just finished watching the last EZA Podcast and it has made me cry. I'm writing this now while crying, hopefully it will help by expressing these feelings. Feels like I lost contact with one of my best friends. It's very hard to put it into words. I know this sounds stupid coming from someone who never knew Kyle in-person, as opposed to you and the other Allies who are actually losing that daily contact with a very dear friend. However, I have watched all of you for tens of thousands of hours since 2006 when I discovered GameTrailers and have watched almost everything you guys have produced. I grew up and matured while watching and listening to you all, so honestly, you all feel like family to me. I'm really gonna miss Kyle and his interactions with the other Allies on a daily/weekly basis. My only consolation is that he will continue to keep streaming and that I still have many of his streams - both solo and in group - to watch, as well as all of the content he has produced on GameTrailers and Easy Allies. Those will be perfect for when he's not streaming and I need some Kyle humor, wisdom and bits in my life. I will continue to follow him and try to support him as best as I can in whatever he ends up doing in the future. In the end, I just wanted to thank you all for making GameTrailers what it was and for creating Easy Allies. With all my heart, Love & Respect. PS. If possible, please send this to Kyle. And Kyle, if you're reading this: Tomorrow is forever all ours! I will forever love you, man.

Jones, what are the plans for future horror game streams? Huber & Damiani? I'm down but it'll be different. Also please Predator hunting ground group stream where Huber is the hunter!

Hey Jones, I know things have been hectic with Kyle's departure and your new responsibility hosting the podcast. But I just want to know if you have a timeline for when Who Is In My Bathroom will be released to the public for remixing? L&R Zach

I know it probably won't mean much coming from my self. And I'm sure you have people closer to you and more important to you saying this. I think you'll have an excellent podcast this week. And if not this week; then I know you won't let a setback get you down, and that you'll come back stronger with every new podcast. Worrying about failing will probably only make that outcome a of failure a bigger possibility. That's all really, I hope this helps somewhat.

Joseph

Hey Jones. I know phase 4 was a big deal last year. Are you guys looking at doing anything public about "phase 5", even if it is just a patreon post or short update? I feel like a yearly update that takes a wholistic look at the channel and outline the major plans for the year will help us get excited about what's to come. Honestly, I'm mainly just hoping to learn what's going on with "Together we RPG."

Anonymous

Hey Jones, how are you doing today. Just wanted to say that I watched the group stream with you playing FF7R and all the allies commenting on it and I gotta say I loved that haha. I would definitely watch more stuff in that vein. Anyway, hypothetical question: If we were all stuck at home because of... let's say a pandemic and we had more free times on our hands, which of the three following games would you recommend to someone based on your limited exposure to them? Which one would you be most interested in to play on your own and which one do you think would make for a better stream? - Fire Emblem: Three Houses - Judgement (with English VA) - Devil May Cry 5 Love & Respect :)

Anonymous

Jones, get Blood to do the "do you all hear that?"

Anonymous

Have probably missed this week but just in case: Do you think that part of post-Kyle EZA will involve Brad taking a more camera-focused role or is he content sitting more behind the scenes? I remember at the phase 4 announcement (I think?) he mentioned he had a show idea. I think his personality is very good at being a foil for the other Allies and would love to see him do more, if he is comfortable, in front of the camera. L&R
