Ian and Huber join the panel to share their feelings on Byleth's reveal in Super Smash. Bros. Ultimate and try to tackle the reasons why their inclusion drew such a strong reaction from the community. We also rip into Nintendo for their anti-consumer practices in Europe.

I thought it was hilarious. The way Sakurai hyped up the secrecy, the line about too many swordsman, counting all the games in binary...he knew exactly how people would react and got 'em good. After all the stupid rumors based on nothing, not a single person guessed who it actually was.

Reaction was fine. It reflected how most felt about it.

ivanosky1253 .

it's not because of byleth being announced or he wasn't the characters that people wanted, it's by the fact that he's the 8th fire emblem character that made the smash community mad, this was a subject talk about before in smash bros wii u corrin bing the 7th people believe that fire emblem representation was too much even sakiri said it him self in the corrin reviled video

I LOVE when new Fire Emblem characters are announced for Smash. Not only am I a fan of the series, and think the FE reps are some of if not THE best fighters in Smash Bros. But mostly, i LOVE the reaction from the community LOL! They get so angry, and frustrated, but i wont be happy till the next Smash Bros game is just Fire Emblem FighterZ.

Why do you love seeing angry and frustrated people? I do not care about Joker, but I loved the reveal and all the hype reactions, I also do not care about Byleth, but all the hate and anger and disappointment is not really entertaining..

Overreact, probably. But we didn't need another Fire Emblem rep. Just like we don't need another Mario or Pokemon rep. Help out one of the smaller franchises, even if it isn't a third party.

A little thing about Nintendo and their return policy. This is all due to Nintendo not setup to revoke game licenses and no systems/teams in place to ensure this is not abused. Microsoft is able to revoke game licenses of purchases made and provide you a 1 time refund per account. The exception being Micro transactions, which they cannot pull back.

Now, I haven't listened to the episode yet...But I think there's actually a solid argument that there's not enough Pokemon fighters. Since it's the most successful Nintendo franchise other than Mario Kart, yet there are no Pokemon from Hoenn or Unova and the only Pokemon from Johto is Pichu which doesn't really count. Otoh, there are too many Pokemon from Kanto. FE has a similar problem - there are too many characters from one game (Awakening).

There is no easy way to say this but I personally was disappointed by this episode and the discussion of the main topic which was Byleth in Smash. From the title of the post/video I thought we were gonna get a thorough look into the situation, what made people's expectations get so high, what did Nintendo do that had a negative effect on the situation, was the disappointed/reaction justified or overblown and how both parties (Nintendo and fans) could/should do better. But instead the episode, essentially, boils down to "harassment is bad". Which is a very true and meaningful statement, but I feel like that's something that you have to build towards (at least in a situation like this) instead of telling people that they are wrong without really discussing everything surrounding the situation. The conclusion is that, yes people should get over their disappointment and don't let that bother them so much, but you first have to discuss what led to those sky high expectations and Nintendo themselves definitely made this situation worse. For one remember when Joker was announced as the first fighter of the pack. Reggie said that this announcement will set the tone for Smash DLC, and that was true until the very last announcement, being Byleth. Secondly, it was the whole build up to the Byleth reveal. When you know you've build up your fans expectations that much with past fighter and you have a possibly disappointing last character DLC, you don't try to do a similarl presentation without at least some sort of news/hint to dampen your fans expectations a little. Nintendo could've just said that with the last DLC character they are trying to focus on their own on-going IPs and that would've helped a ton, A TON, with fans keeping their expectations in check. With the way Sakurai talked about people hopefully not getting mad when they see who the character is during the reveal itself, It's clear that they knew people would be angry, so in some (maybe small) ways Nintendo brought some of this on their own. (not that this will excuse the awful behavior and reaction some of the Smash fans have had) Thirdly, it's another Fire Emblem rep which makes it the 8th one. That alone would've been disappointing regardless of the other points I brought up. Also this is where I think that you guys are a bit hung up on the Dante thing. Even if we didn't have the Dante rumor (which wasn't even a rumor, people saw the date for DMC3SE new reveal for Switch and the Smash date reveal, and the three question marks and three fingers, and wrongfully assumed that it was Dante) you would've gotten similar reactions to Byleth being one of the DLC characters for the game, when there is already 7 other FE reps in the game. Let alone her/him being the last DLC character for this pass, which brings me to my last point. Byleth being the last DLC character of the first pass was just bad marketing. It's as simple as that, and Ian kinda mentioned this a little in the discussion as well. You don't go from 4 unexpected third party characters to a first party rep (that you know will be disappointing to a big part of your fanbase) for your last DLC character. Now none of this excuses the reaction or the overblown negativity that we've seen surrounding the Byleth reveal. That's still terrible and people really need to understand that even when you are disappointed with something, the answer is NEVER getting mad at the developers and especially harassing them. But putting things into perspective like this, at least helps you understand where people might be coming from (which is something that Huber was wondering about during this episode) and how each side (Nintendo and the disappointed fans) could do better in the future. Again I thought we were gonna get a breakdown and a deep dive into the whole situation after seeing the title of the video, which we sadly didn't get. I'm sorry for being a bit harsh, I like you guys and your content a lot, so it's difficult to watch a discussion like this and not think about how much better the discussion could've been, knowing some of your other outputs. Anyway, sorry for the wall of text. I still had fun watching the episode even if I didn't agree with the direction of the main discussion. See you guys in the next video. As always, Love & Respect

I think the EZA as a whole is juuust a bit tired overall. No hot takes, just vanilla takes all around.

that's nice

I find it hilarious that people are now "disappointed" that the allies, like most people, dont really care that the fifth character in a total of 11 dlc characters was another Fire Emblem character. It really is not that serious.

Personally I'm disappointed in how the episode was constructed (and how the discussion was handled), not the fact that they weren't disappointed in Byleth him/herself.

potato potato also another potato

nah...another generic sword user, another FE character...she'll play fine, but its a crap choice all the same.
