Oh boy, that's a spicy number one.

Anonymous

That ending is priceless

Sarah Wampler

Dancing Cloud just about killed me. Kudos to whoever edited that masterpiece

Anonymous

Just a small correction, The Black Mages are no longer around, Square Enix shut them down because some members were no longer employees and Uematsu create a new band called Earthbound Papas.

Monika

Oof, that's a tough one! No real surprises (especially number one and number two, I feel like those were locked from the start), still great picks, few of them made my eyes a bit glassy :') Nothing like a good video game music <3 (extra points for the perfect editing od the video!)

Kannel

lol way to end it! perfect!

Anonymous

Jeremy Soul better be on here or our relationship is over allies.

Jordan Brown

Haven't watched yet because I'm at work but Uematsu better be #1! Haha

If ever there was a top ten I wanted the discussion for, this is it. Mahito Yokota has surpassed Kondo for me even if the original Mario Bros theme is more popular haha. The modern era of big name game Nintendo music is just sublime.

Im always happy to watch top 10 to get to know more great works that I was not aware of. I heard so many beautiful music in this videos and Im eager to find more. Thank you so much. Always great works! :)

One of my favourite composers is Tomohito Nishiura, he rarely gets mentioned in top lists. His Soundtrack for Dark Cloud, Rogue Galaxy and especially Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2) are fantastic. Every songs fits so well with the places it's used in DC2, and is really nice to listen to outside of the game too. (tbf i haven't listened to his newer Soundtracks wich have been all for Professor Layton since 2007)

Lack of Marty O'Donnell borders on insulting. Cancelling my Patreon, throwing away my computer, calling the police, moving overseas.

Anonymous

Great list, #1 is such an easy choice. Sad that marty o'donnell didn't make the list. The OG Halo trilogy are GOAT level soundtracks but can't always win.

Anonymous

This list is perfect.

Brandon K Gann

This is my favorite Top 10 to date.

Anonymous

Great list but would've loved to see Motoi Sakuraba on it too.

Anonymous

Yes yes YES please more lists like this in the future. Would love to see ‘Top 10 Directors’, ‘Top 10 Industry Innovators’, and/or ‘Top 10 Producers’ in the future!

Great list! Also very inspiring to go listen to some of the music of these composers. A favourite of mine is Grant Kirkhope. I love how he gives every instrument its own character. Another favourite, of whom I was sure he would make this list, is Koichi Sugiyama (Dragon Quest series). His music is classical yet in its genre very unique. Not as diverse as other composers, but surely a high level of quality.

I understand everyone has different tastes, but to snub Marty O'Donnell and the rest of the Halo team is shocking. The list of musicians that have lined up to work with that team includes Paul McCartney and Steve Vai. Seriously... Allies... I am SHOCKED.

Jeremy Soule, just a fraction of his work: Dota 2, The Elder Scrolls Online, Skyrim, World of Warcraft, Dead Rising series, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Prey (2006), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Warhammer series, Harry Potter series, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Icewind Dale, Secret of Evermore, and basically the entire Guild Wars series. I know that his lack of inclusion is probably due to the lack of allies who have played enough of his games, but I know almost every gamer has enjoyed at least one of these soundtracks. Don't get me wrong, the people on this list are beloved legends, however, Jeremy Soule has been making incredible music for numerous epic fantasy games for so many years now, it just feels like a shame he isn't on it. Still loved this vid, it was really well thought out. LnR4L

Love the video, but where is Jeremy Soule?

Anonymous

Very good job! Amazing top 10 guys! Pausing to listen to the music when you did was a great touch.

Anonymous

List pretty much is perfect. Especially like the top 5. For sure. Buuuuuuuuut, my man Masafumi Takada should've at least gotten the runner up love!

Anonymous

I'm pretty surprised not to see Mick Gordon on here, his Prey and Doom soundtracks catapulted him to one of my favourite composers.

Anonymous

Another vote for Jeremy Soule here, kept waiting to hear the iconic Morrowind theme but it didn’t come :( Still a great list, L&R

Anonymous

There couldn't have been another number one. Really liked this top ten and I would love more "industry focused" episodes!

Anonymous

I can't decide if Mediocre or just Mainstream is the word I'm looking for lol but I've always known The Allies to have a sub-par musical taste as a whole

Anonymous

The edits in this are the best that y'all have put out to date

How can Mick Gordon not be in here

A pretty comprehensive list overall, covering the various allies. A list like this is obviously very subjective to whatever games and soundtracks that you have been able to experience, but they are always open to a bit of questioning. I personally think that Grant Kirkhope deserves a spot close to David Wise. Composers like Disasterpeace(Fez and drifter) and Darren Korb (Bastion and Pyre) argeuably are equally as inspired as Jessica curry and Austin Wintory. I'm honestly suprised Curry made the top. I love Dear Esther's OST but idk if it's worthy of beating out some of the others. I think Fez OSt is a modern masterpiece. Also, Mitsuda is number 1 for me personally because crono trigger and cross are the best soundtracks of all time imo. Regardless, you would be hard pressed to argue with the top 3. Mitsuda, Kondo and Uematsu are all legends to gaming much like Ennio Morricone and John Williams to film.

People need to remember, when a site/publication does lists, its often representative of the people making the list. In this case, each of the Allies prob got their pick on it. So it’s less of a “this is the definitive best list of Composers of all time” and more like “the allies personal top composers”. I would argue, their lists are mostly more varied than most other top 10’s ive seen before. Because their group is pretty diverse in their taste of things.

That ending bit!! ❤️

I thought for sure we would see Harry Gregson-Williams, but I do understand how many composers their are. I enjoyed this so much for the sweet tunes.

Anonymous

Great top 10! Personally I would have put Martin O’Donnell and Jack Wall in there

Honestly, HGW gets too much credit on his own for his work on MGS. Sure, he turned the MGS main theme in a cool Hollywoodesque tune for MGS2 for example, but a lot of the atmospheric ingame music wasn't done by him at all, but by several lesser credited Japanese composers. I recommend you give this video a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj34_2-xd6w This guys is really knowledgeable about this stuff.

Ian is on fire! Awesome stuff! Thanks guys, I really liked it

Anonymous

I'll take David Wise at #5 than no David Wise at all

Anonymous

Without Marty O'Donnell and Mick Gordon this just seems off.

Anonymous

Great choices all, but the versatility and influence of Marty O'Donnell is hard to deny--especially given how he engaged the development of the Xbox at the hardware level. The way he championed multi-channel sound in that generation has yielded so many benefits today. And who in gaming doesn't immediately recognize the Mjölnir Theme? Other than that omission--maybe do honorable mentions next time?--I love this list. I'd personally rate Yoko Shimomura higher, but hey. Great video.

Anonymous

Nice list! Changes I'd make: - Jessica Curry - Akira Yamaoka + Disasterpeace (Fez, Hyper Light Drifter) + Hitoshi Sakimoto (Final Fantasy Tactics, FFXII)

Anonymous

Watched Nobuo live in Sthlm a few years ago. An incredible experience. The drummer had directed Super Mario RPG, so weird and lovely.

Darren Korb. 'nuff said ... also Jeremy Soule ... and also Keiichi Okabe
