This episode was supposed to go up the last day of January, and was the very first thing we recorded in the new studio space. Trailer Jones continues to be that chicken I chase around the yard that is my EZA schedule, but it’s something that I still very much enjoy doing and it was fun chatting with Ian and Kyle about these very particular trailers. Thank you for the feedback regarding the last experimental episode of this show, and I look forward to putting the studio transition behind us and getting this series on track. We’ll be back at the end of the month (fingers crossed) with another round of panelists, trailers, and bizarre scores.

Trailer Jones - Dusk, Far Cry: New Dawn, and Mortal Kombat 11

A brand new year of trailers brings us a surprise guest appearance in the newest Mortal Kombat, a gloriously gory old-school FPS, and the latest (but maybe not greatest) Far Cry. Did these ads make us want to play these games? It's a dirty job but somebody's gotta score 'em. Compliments on the camera framing! The framing always bothered me a little in past shows (worst offender was the recent Frametrap episode) I enjoyed the episode. Thanks! Shame none of you heard of Andrew Hulshult before though! He's pretty well known in the old-skool FPS community and made some killer soundtracks.

Ian, or whoever else may be in charge of sound, please listen to this and contemplate its implications: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAxHlLK3Oyk ("Alvin Lucier - I Am Sitting In A Room")

Is the camera out of focus? Everyone looks blurry to me.

You would still probably count it as a problem for the trailer given the confusion, but groups of stages in old shooters -- most prominently DOOM -- were called "episodes". Knee Deep in the Dead, The Shores of Hell, Inferno, Thy Flesh Consumed, etc. They're basically the equivalent of what you would consider 'worlds'. So, on one hand, it’s another element directly appealing to their hardcore fanbase, but on the other, given the response here, it’s clearly a problem for the less familiar.

Thanks for giving Dusk some love. It can't be said enough how great that game is. I am sure Huber would be all over it since I know he is a fan of Duke Nukem 3D and the like. I also want to give a shout out to Ion Maiden and Amid Evil, along with Dusk, these 3 games a bringing about a nice old school fps revival.

If I could add my two cents to the MK11 trailer discussion. It felt like to me they were targeting people who don't play video games. Like for gamers they'd just have a normal gameplay trailer. This Rousey featurette feels like they're trying to get people who don't play video games interested by bringing in an athlete and having her explain what voice acting is. People who might not game regularly might recognize the name Mortal Kombat and recognize who Rousey is and maybe check out the game.

Neither here nor there, But given that the panel astutely discerned that Dusk's trailer is speaking to those familar with 90s shooters, and appealing to them. A number of 90s shooters were structured as episodes. Specifically the id software ones - quake, wolfenstein, doom. So while I get why, as people outside the genre, they would think "this is weird marketing", the very thing they praised the trailer for doing well (focus on base) is the reason the panel didn't understand the messaging. Now, should the trailer have explained how it was being released better? Yeah, I think so too. So this comment is neither here nor there.
