Greetings everyone,
Today, let's talk about what it means to have power and the effect it can have on us. Or, more importantly, the effect we can have on others when we come into power.
The nature of duality can confuse a lot of people. Even more so, it tends to get overlooked when we analyze things. People tend to view things in black and white, even when they say they don't believe they do. I believe this is rooted in a need to simplify problems before us.
In Legends of Everfree, the duality of magic (or power) was demonstrated more explicitly. But it is something we’ve been seeing frequently since season four of Friendship is Magic; where at least three quarters of the episodes demonstrated not just virtues but also how those virtues could be used against us.
This movie also spent a lot of its time retreading familiar ground for us. Gloriosa Daisy and Timber Spruce showed us what can happen when there’s a breakdown in communication and compromise. Sunset Shimmer demonstrated the importance of honesty and looking out for your friends with Flash Sentry and Twilight Sparkle. And there’s a lot to be said for persistence and teamwork with the way the other campers were constantly constructing the new dock.
These are all things that we’ve talked about a million times throughout this series. If anything, I’m glad that the establishment and reinforcement of these themes is becoming more casual and easier for the student body as a whole, instead of dedicating whole episodes or movies to achieving that goal. It shows the progress that we’ve made.
I didn't particularly enjoy Legend of Everfree. I felt like it didn't do justice to its characters, the story had a few holes in it, and the lack of consequences for attempted murder is starting to irk me. However, it did go over some pretty important life lessons. This is a heck of a lot to pull from such a train wreck, isn't it?
