Gary was four hours into another overnight shift working as a janitor at the prom dress warehouse, and he was grousing to himself about how the spoiled little bitches who wore these fancy dresses had no idea how lucky they were. They had it easy, dancing the night away, while he was stuck here mopping floors until his back ached...

Just then there was a poof of pink smoke and a girl appeared holding a sparkling wand.

"Hello, Gary," she said. "I'm the Prom Fairy, and I'm here to make your wish come true!"

Gary gawked at her, wondering if he was being pranked or if too many nights alone were making him see things.

"Hang on," he said. "My wish? What do you..?"

But before Gary could finish his question the girl waved her wand and he found himself spinning. Everything became a whirl of pale blue, fluttering fabric, he was in a tornado of taffeta, and when he finally came to a stop he was stunned to discover that he'd become a girl in the biggest, poofiest dress he'd ever seen.

"There," the Prom Fairy said. "Now you'll be the most beautiful prom queen in all the land! And you'll meet your very own handsome prince, fall in love and live happily ever!"

"But, this isn't what I..."

"Tut-tut! No need to thank me!"

There was another puff of pink smoke and the Prom Fairy was gone, leaving Gary alone and tottering on his sparkly blue high heels. He heard music, the rows of dresses faded away around him and suddenly he was surrounded by dancing young couples. He was at a prom!

And across the room there was a young man with dark hair and broad shoulders, smiling at Gary...
