Hey everyone!

Terry here. Me and the team are starting to get the wellbeing systems in place, and I wanted to ask your opinion on how Hunger and Thirst should work overall.

Also, please take this chance to tell me your ideas of game design and gameplay mechanics you'd like to see added!

Currently, the system I have in mind consists of a simple cycle:

  • Hunger and Thirst get drained over time, at higher or lower rates depending on environmental effects or buffs/debuffs.
  • To recover, you buy food from stores or cook them from raw ingredients, same for drinks.
  • Different foods and drinks recover at different rates and take varying amounts of time to be consumed (from 5 to 10 seconds).

And also:

  • Some foods and drinks also provide moods, some based on 'Favourite Food' trait synergy.
  • Foods and drinks spoil over time, but the rate at which they spoil can be slowed if stored in fridges or similar containers.

So the main cycle is pretty basic, and I’d love to know what you think about it.

Food and Drinks Effects Brainstorming:

Things get more complex when we look into each food and drink, and how their tags add up when it comes to your Favourite Food trait choices. Currently, the food tags are:

  • Simple
  • Sweet
  • Sour
  • Salty
  • Bitter
  • Savoury
  • Spicy
  • Dairy
  • Fatty
  • Healthy
  • Wholesome
  • Organic
  • Exotic (Food made from rare ingredients, like Shark Fin Soup)
  • Gourmet
  • Junk
  • Weird

Each food and drink can have more than one tag, and I plan to have them carry a main one based on their primary ingredient (Dairy for example), and other secondary tags that could provide additional bonuses.

The effects of each tag is open for debate since these will be later additions once the wellbeing system is in place, so please let me know what you guys think each tag should be about and if you feel like something is missing!

Poll: Next Food and Drink Cuisine inspired update

We have also finished working on our basic set of food and drinks. A lot of options will be available once we roll out Eating and Drinking, ranging from snacks to full fledged meals.

So this week’s question is what cuisine should we focus on next? We’ll develop food and drink alternatives based on the winner category, so help us figure this one out!

(By default British food will already be in the game, of course! If your option is not here, write it in the comments!!)

Please don’t put shark fin soup in the game!!

I think the system you've already worked out or thought about is perfect and complex enough. 🙂 I love everything you've explained about it! 🙂 I'd love to see Sushi/Asian food and Italian most and dining in restaurants such as takeaway food/bakery?! (fast food on the way to work for example) too. Very curious about a healthcare system and hospital etc. in the future. 🙂 Keep up the fantastic work! 🙂

My rating for this is codfish/custard tart, no Portuguese food as option :/ Also for the buffs and stuff: condiments could add different effects too if you add them to certain meals, for example, adding sugar would give you an extra 5% energy need, or putting ketchup on your fries would give you a happiness boost for a while!

I would like to have a vegan tag and be able to make that a lifestyle choice so that my peeps don't eat food that isn't vegan (unless I make them do it).

Slippers

Thinking about this some more, I think you should avoid subjective tags like healthy/wholesome since there are widely varying opinions about what that is. For example, some people would say that a simple custard is extremely healthy, while others would consider it the devil's own food. People have strong opinions about this and speaking for myself it would be very annoying and immersion-breaking if the game tells me a certain food is wholesome and I disagree with that. One way to deal with this though is to make those tags editable, or allow people to assign their own "healthy" and "wholesome" foods. You could also have a vegetarian tab/lifestyle, although that isn't a substitute for vegan.

I would love for vegan, vegetarian and pesquetarian tags!

Maybe we could have a negative mood for our character if we always eat the same thing? It would force players to do more than just spam eat boiled eggs for example

I would like Nigerian food 😗

I completely agree with the healthy/wholesome thing. I actually would prefer this tag to not even exist, That along with junk. I completely agree with different foods giving different effects. However having healthy/wholesome/junk words used is complete diet culture words and is not healthy for those with/recovering from disordered eating such as myself.

Decided should just make it my own comment.

Agree with others who have suggested tags based on dietary preference, especially when that's something you can set whilst building a sim: vegetarian/ vegan/ pescatarian/ omnivore etc.

Rae-Revolution

I disagree with the junk/wholesome/healthy comments. These tags won't go on things that could be debated on, and are pretty universal. Cheesy puffs are an obvious junk food. Fresh fruits and veggies are obviously healthy and can be tagged either healthy or/and wholesome.

I feel fine about leaving "healthy" and "junk" in, but I think (and I got the idea that this is what you're planning anyway) they should only be used on the more clear-cut/extreme cases of health and junk. I'm not sure what wholesome foods even are? Also I would also love to see vegan/vegetarian tags. I think they would be pretty important to a lot of people's immersion. The cuisines listed are all good but what I would really love to see is Indian food!

Slippers

I like the idea of encouraging a variety of different foods, as long as it doesn't require your person to eat specific foods or food groups to get that buff. It is boring when I watch someone play that other game and they just make the same food over and over.

Slippers

Considering how much controversy and strong feeling there is around food/diet, it would be tricky to set those tags without offending someone, especially if they aren't editable. And as Alicia said, a big part of recovering from disordered eating involves rethinking our assumptions about food, especially our judgments about "good" and "bad" foods. While this might not be a big issue for you, it is for many people. So the idea of "healthy" food isn't as simple as it appears.

Slippers

I'd also like to see some traits or options about preferred drinks. For example, peeps could want to be teetotalers, juicers, wine connoisseurs? Etc.
