It's been like six months since this project started, but the Mass Effect Games That Defined Me video is finally live! I dove deep into the first Mass Effect game, talking about how it completely flipped my understanding of games upside down, and its place in the wider medium as an inheritor of an entire genre of storytelling techniques which brought that expertise to an entirely new generation of players (you know, me). This one has been a long time coming, but between the detours over the summer and the scope of the project, it took quite a bit of effort to get it across the finish line. As with any video I have bouncing around this long, I'm exceptionally happy to finally let this one see the light of day, and I hope you guys enjoy.

Looking ahead, I actually nabbed a review copy for Raji that I'll be doing a review on next, and then it's time for the (belated) quarterly wrapup.

Mass Effect Expanded What Games Were Capable of (For Me) | GTDM

Mass Effect expanded the scope of what a teenage me thought a video game could do. But the trick of that statement is that that scope has always existed — I just hadn't discovered it yet. This video is part of a series dubbed Games That Defined Me, where I write love letters to the games nearest and dearest to my heart and talk about my personal experiences and how these games established some of my most basic assumptions about the medium. If you like what you see here, be sure to go support me on patreon, because for every $200/mo milestone I hit there, I'll start making a new one of these!
