Snatch Game was introduced in Season 2 of Rupaul’s Drag Race, where Tatianna’s Britney and Pandora Box’s Carol Channing defined great performances in the genre, and has since appeared on every season as a recurring main challenge. It parodies “Match Game”, a television competition show originally airing through the 60s and 70s where contestants tried to match answers given by celebrity panelists to silly fill-in-the-blank questions. Hey look - there’s Betty White! But Snatch Game is less about being a parody of Match game - which was always silly and intentionally comedic - and moreso a challenge meant to test the improv ability and comedy chops of drag race contestants. Since it’s debut, Snatch Game has been hailed as a fan favorite challenge with average IMDB user ratings of Snatch game episodes often rating higher than their respective season’s entire average episodic rating. It’s pretty easy to guess why fans love to snatch game episodes. A) Everyone wants to laugh. And B) Parodies of often-much more famous celebrity characters offer an inherent relatability factor to a wider audience. And Snatch game is not only loved by fans, but also by the franchise who gets to pocket invaluable intellectual property and the queens who have an opportunity to give unforgettable performances. Which brings me to my next point: People love snatch game because it is typically unforgettable. In that it is both very good. And very bad. So - Let’s take a look at some data: of which we are limiting the scope of our analysis to the regular US-based seasons. Including season 14, there have now been 13 snatch games. Typically they appear somewhere in episodes 4-6 in the earlier seasons and in episode 7 or later in the newer, longer seasons. There has always been a minimum of 8 contestants left by the snatch game episode and at most, 10. And, this next section is subjective, but I attempted to quantify how many queens in any given season we can expect to deliver truly great performances, how many we can expect to deliver safe performances, and how many we can expect to be straight up bad. By my count, we can on average expect 2 truly great performances per snatch game, or about 23% of the total number of queens participating.
