I never was into collecting.....until I got into Funko pops. But I collect those because I like them not because of their potential value. I know they're not going to be worth anything in the future save for maybe one or two if that.

It's almost as if virtually none of the supposed collectors understand that an item's future worth is based on said item's rarity at that point in the future.

Rarity helps for sure, but demand is the other big one. For example, Incredible Hulk 181 is the first appearance of Wolverine, it's worth a TON of money even though realistically there are so many copies out there it's ridiculous, but somehow the value of it keeps going up as people are willing to pay more and more for it (and in the collectibles world, an item is basically worth what the last idiot was willing to pay for it).

That's my biggest advice to collectors, collect what you like, do it for the enjoyment of the hobby. Trying to do it for investment purposes is a fool's game unless you're really going to treat it like a job, in which case you're no longer a collector, you're just an investor in tangible goods.

Recently found the gold plated Pokémon cards in their balls from the 2000 Pokémon movie and had the same thought but then after some quick google searches found out they are still worthless.

I really enjoy videos like this this is a subject I’m not all that familiar with so it’s super interesting and entertains to listen to you dive into it a bit. Keep it up!

My thoughts as a Pokemon card collector for 4 years- The old stuff is still going to be worth a lot, as long as Pokemon is relevant. It's been going for 20 years now, It'll probably be relevant for another 20 years. I go to card tournaments where the kids got the parents back into collecting. There will be a few cards from this era worth something- just not as many as these "bandwagon collectors" think. It's not easy to pull a Rainbow Pikachu VMax from the newest set, odds are about 1 in 1,000 packs. And as someone who has been following the market like me, you knew when it was the right time to buy the old stuff. Completed my base set of cards in July, I've just watched the prices go up while laughing.

Its not about value. Its about seeing how many toys can i stack in my closet before it falls over and kills me

Well, if I had known some people were desperate for old cards like that, I'd offer all my Pokemon cards I have stored to never see light again, for a pretty penny. I kind of moved onto collecting books, games and figurines, they will end me one day, it's a prediction

Speculation and investment, especially in collectables, are almost entirely Luck-based.
