Natalie Portman vs Rose McGowan - DOSE #300

Support Buckley: http://patreon.com/DoseofBuckley In a semi-sequel to two videos ("Feminism vs Feminism", AND "Rose McGowan: Billboard Police"), Buckley looks at yet another battle where no matter who wins, everyone they're trying to help loses. It's Dose #300, and it only took 10 years to get here!

Congratulations on 300 doses, Adam! 🥳 Here’s to hopefully another 300 things being irritating enough for you to make a video about them! 🥂🤪

Buckley’s evil laugh though! 😍

Best. Evil Laugh. Ever. Kudos on 300 doses Buckley.

Women are women's own worst enemies... And you could probably use this exact script for US politics right now. Thanks for 300!

“Yes! Fight & Struggle” ... Buckley’s voice would be a great villain in cartoons ... that laugh though ... wow

Exactly right, women always seem to have the instinct to tear each other down. It started in high school for me, when I decided it was just less complicated for me to be friends with guys instead of girls. Except it wasn’t cause I was then labeled some pretty awful things.

I read Catch and Kill which details Farrow’s talks with McGowan about her experience with Weinstein... that monster really did a number on her and probably cost her a career. I understand why she’s pissed. Buckley is right though, this only plays into the hands of the sexist industry.

The real question is when will we get to see those close-ups of Emilia Clarke's on the silver screen? Come on, Taratino, get crackin'.

Specter Koen

That evil laugh at the end cemented it for me. That and his Dracula impression from last week.

I think that although Rose does have a point about Natalie (having multiple opportunities to work with female directors but choosing not to), she really isn't being genuine. Feminists don't tear other women down over little things like this..

Enkixx

I've seen plenty of arguments over what feminism is and isn't so it's hard to say what the "one true feminist" looks like. Plenty of people count themselves as "real feminists" because they exclude trans-women from the discussion and revel in cutting them out. There's the fun argument of whether stripping and sex work is degrading and no one should engage in it lest they play into the patriarchy or that sex work is work and should be legalized. Feminism itself has too broad a spectrum of opinion and far too much infighting to say that real feminism doesn't involve tearing each other down.

Also great work as usual Buckley. I used to watch the all your videos as they came out on my lunch breaks and I'm glad to be able to give my monetary appreciation for the years of entertainment.

Agreed, I can understand McGowan’s frustration a bit but her response was wayyyy too harsh

I'm amused by the fact that the support me on patreon thing is still there, on patreon.

doseofbuckley

Yeah I don't have a way to get rid of it for Patreon-only subscribers (since this is the exact same link that will go public when it's available to everyone else). Unless this thing accepts DailyMotion videos or something, then I have to upload everything to two different sites. So, yeah, sorry about that.

THIS... IS... BUCKLEY! Congrats on 300! :P

Should their be gendered categories for Best Director?

doseofbuckley

Well it's a fine line, right? On one hand, doing so would admit that they aren't really equal (although I'm sure one would argue that's not why they do the actor and actress categories separately) when people would argue that there's nothing inherent that makes males better directors than females. On the other, it WOULD bring more female directors into the spotlight. I doubt they would ever split the category, but it does have some pros to go along with the cons.

Anonymous

Could it be that no female directors were nominated because other directors made superior movies? You don't get nominated for best director just because you're a female director. You get nominated if you make a great film worthy of mention. Actresses don't receive awards simply because they're female. They win awards if their performance in movies were exceptional. Helena Bonham Carter, Ann Hathaway, Hilary Swank, etc. win awards because they don't whine about gender inequality but instead prove themselves through their acting that they deserve recognition.
